Missing Mom, Returning Home to Bang Bo 2/15: Eating Bang Bo's Pickled Clam Salad

Bang Bo, Samut Prakan Province, is my hometown, mr.hotsia. This place is not only where I grew up but also a collection of memories, lifestyles, and food flavors that have stayed with me since childhood. This time, I returned to my hometown to fulfill my longing for my mother and, of course, not to miss the famous signature dish of Bang Bo:Bang Bo's Pickled Clam Saladwhich has a unique character unlike any other.

When talking about Bang Bo, many may know it as a famous source of salted fish widely known across the country. Bang Bo's salted fish is special because the brackish water in Samrong Canal flowing through the area allows natural food like red worms to thrive, which are the favorite food of the salted fish. This makes the fish plump with a sweet, rich flavor and crispy texture, becoming a popular souvenir that visitors must buy.Bang Bo Salted Fishis therefore not just a product but a symbol of a community deeply connected to water and canals for a long time.

But this time, I want to tell the story of a local dish that many Bang Bo people are proud of, which is “Pickled Clam Salad.” I tasted it for the first time since returning home today. The clams used are mostly fresh blood cockles caught by locals from nearby canals, preserved using an ancient method with salt and fresh lime juice to season perfectly—not too pungent but with a balanced sweet and sour taste.

The pickled clam salad here is packed with herbs including green onions, coriander, sliced kaffir lime leaves, and spicy bird’s eye chili that is hot but not tongue-burning. It is topped with a secret dressing made from fish sauce, palm sugar, and fresh lime juice. I remember my mother often made this for me when we caught a lot of fish or clams at home. This flavor is unforgettable, and eating it again upon returning home feels like traveling back in time.

Additionally, Bang Bo is a community located along Samrong Canal, a main canal connecting to the Bang Pakong River. Originally, locals used boats as their primary transportation and for trade. The traces of the old market such asThe 150-Year-Old Bang Phli Old Marketstill firmly preserve the lively atmosphere of a riverside market. Although roads have replaced boats in recent times, the traditional market vibe remains visible and tangible.

While strolling through Bang Bo market, I saw vendors displaying fresh clams, including blood cockles, mussels, and clams. Some stalls offered delicious seafood dipping sauces for tasting fresh. I bought pickled clams to take home for my mother and recalled the times I used to catch clams with my friends using a tool called “Ai Ngo” at my Bang Bo home during childhood.Ai Ngo Catching Contest with Mr. Hotsia Anne On Tour, Bang Bois a fun activity still practiced by people in this community.

For those who want to taste authentic Bang Bo pickled clam salad, I recommend visiting the market early in the morning to find fresh clams to prepare yourself. If not convenient, many local restaurants in Bang Bo still maintain the original recipe well. The fragrant herbal dressing and fresh clams are a perfect match.

When coming to Bang Bo, besides experiencing the local food and lifestyle, walking along the canal and observing villagers living simply with the water and canal is a charm that makes me, mr.hotsia, love and miss my hometown unchanged.

If you want to know Bang Bo more deeply, besides salted fish and pickled clam salad, I recommend following my other stories in the articleBan Rakatwhich tells about this canal-side community, or the unique local activity such asLotus Throwing Festivalheld regularly in the community, where you can see the vibrant life and culture still alive.

Finally, I want to say that returning home to Bang Bo this time is not just a trip but a fulfillment of the heart and flavors I truly grew up with. Anyone who wants to experience the true essence of Bang Bo must not miss “Bang Bo’s Pickled Clam Salad,” proudly presented by me, mr.hotsia.
