For those who want to truly experience canal-side living, you must come toKhlong Ban RakatBang Bo District, Samut Prakan Province, my hometown as mr.hotsia. This is the starting point of my life story and childhood memories. This canal is a branch of Khlong Samrong, which is important to the riverside community along the Bang Pakong River. I grew up with the water and Bang Bo's famous pla salid (striped snakehead fish), known as the most delicious in Thailand.
Khlong Ban Rakat is not just an ordinary canal; it is the lifeblood of the Bang Bo villagers who have used it for travel, trade, and daily life since the time of their grandparents. Locals still paddle long-tail boats to the market, buy goods, or even engage in traditional fishing activities that I once shared stories about inThe Mr. Hotsia 'Ai Ngo' Fishing Competition - Anne on Tourwhich was a fun event my friends and I participated in, creating precious memories.
Morning atmosphere by Khlong Ban Rakat
My favorite time is early morning at Khlong Ban Rakat. The atmosphere is peaceful, with light mist floating over the water and the sound of long-tail boats passing by along with monks on boats going for alms. This is a way of life rarely seen in big cities, which I have captured inEarly Morning Walk Home Clipwhere you can truly see the beauty of nature and the villagers' lifestyle.
Khlong Ban Rakat is also a famous breeding ground for pla salid (striped snakehead fish). Bang Bo's pla salid is known for its plumpness and sweet, rich flavor because the brackish water in the canal encourages the growth of red plankton, the favorite food of pla salid, helping the fish grow faster and have firmer flesh than elsewhere. I grew up with this fish and the canal water, deeply understanding the villagers' wisdom in managing fish ponds and rice farming called 'Tee Na,' which helps the fish live safely.Bang Bo Pla Salidis not just a fish but a symbol of Bang Bo that I am proud of.
Markets and canal-side life that retain their old charm
Another thing I want to recommend is taking a stroll through the old markets nearby, such as150-Year-Old Bang Phli Marketwhich is not far from my home. These markets still use traditional wooden structures, with small shops selling food, daily necessities, and fresh fruits and vegetables from gardens. It is a community that admirably preserves traditional ways of life.
Although roads have improved access nowadays, the canal markets still hold the charm of boat trading and friendly greetings among familiar faces. I often paddle my boat to the market myself, which helps me feel close to the source of life and the nature that remains unchanged.
Traditional activities and must-see experiences
If you visit my home at Khlong Ban Rakat, you must not miss the traditional fishing activity using 'Ai Ngo' traps to catch the abundant shrimp and fish in the canal. This technique was the basis of fun competitions my friends and I held, which became stories inThe Mr. Hotsia 'Ai Ngo' Fishing Competition - Anne on Tourthat I recommend you try to experience.
There are also local traditions and water-related events such as the Lotus Throwing Festival or the Bang Phli Boat Race, reflecting the deep bond between the community and the waterways. If you are interested in these stories, you can read my detailed articles about the community and traditions in Bang Bo.
Memories and the sense of home of mr.hotsia
For me, mr.hotsia, returning to visit home at Khlong Ban Rakat is not just a visit to a place but a return to the roots and true spirit of life. This is where I learned and grew up surrounded by nature and the genuine livelihood of villagers.
Every time I walk along the small roads by the canal or paddle through agricultural gardens, I feel a happiness and peace that cannot be found in big cities. Bang Bo and Khlong Ban Rakat are destinations I want everyone to experience.A slow lifestyle full of warmth and stories from the past that still live on.
