Eating Grandma's Hainanese Chicken Rice in Bang Bo, Samut Prakan: A local flavor from the heart by mr.hotsia

If anyone has the chance to visit Bang Bo, a small district in Samut Prakan Province, which is not only famous for its renowned pla salid fish but also has the delicious Grandma's Hainanese Chicken Rice that I, mr.hotsia, want to specially share. This is one of my unforgettable hometown food memories. On my latest trip back home, I didn't miss the chance to eat at Grandma's Hainanese Chicken Rice shop located in the Bang Bo community without hesitation.

Bang Bo is a small community hidden in a lowland area with Samrong Canal flowing through. It is a rice farming and pla salid fish breeding area famous nationwide (for those interested in Bang Bo pla salid, I have written about it in detailhere). This lifestyle connected to water and agriculture results in very fresh and excellent local ingredients. Grandma's Hainanese Chicken Rice uses fresh ingredients and is cooked with heartfelt care like locals.

My Grandma's Hainanese Chicken Rice shop is located near Bang Bo Market, which itself has a charming rustic vibe that admirably preserves the traditional community market style (if you want to see an old riverside market that still retains its unique character, try visitingBang Phli 150-Year-Old Old Market). This shop has been open for a long time. Locals told me it is a regular spot for residents and does not focus on tourists like famous shops in big cities.

I clearly remember the first time I arrived; the aroma of chicken rice cooked with chicken broth and just the right spices hit my nose, making me order immediately. The chicken rice here is not like the usual oily or soggy types found elsewhere. Grandma's style is dry-cooked, with soft but not mushy grains, deeply fragrant, showing genuine care in preparation.

The chicken served alongside is tender boiled chicken soaked in broth, not dry or tough like typical boiled chicken. Large pieces of chicken offer the natural sweetness of fresh meat, paired with Grandma's special dipping sauce made from fresh chili, crushed garlic, vinegar, and sugar perfectly balanced. This chicken rice dish fills not only your stomach but also your heart with its profound flavor.

Additionally, the shop offers hot chicken soup served in small bowls, easy to sip. I love that the broth is neither greasy nor too salty but smooth and fragrant with simple herbal scents that remind me of my childhood.

Another thing I appreciate is the simple atmosphere of the shop, with old wooden tables mixed with the chatter of local customers who come continuously, making you feel like you are truly experiencing the real lifestyle of Bang Bo people.

For those traveling from Bangkok or nearby provinces, visiting Bang Bo is not difficult. Major roads connecting the city are easily accessible. After enjoying Grandma's Hainanese Chicken Rice, you can stroll around the community market or drive to nearby attractions like the Bang Phli 150-Year-Old Old Market, which still preserves the charm of a traditional riverside market (read about Bang Phli Old Markethere)

). Bang Bo is also known for its nationally famous pla salid fish, which I have written about in detail in several posts (such asBang Bo Pla Salid). This means the food sources here are truly fresh and abundant.

If you want to see the real atmosphere and hear my full story as mr.hotsia, you can watch the videoEating Grandma's Hainanese Chicken Rice in Bang Boon the MrHotsiaAEC YouTube channel. I personally filmed the shop's atmosphere and interviewed the owner. It's genuine and delicious—definitely worth trying.

Finally, I want to say that going back to eat Grandma's Hainanese Chicken Rice in Bang Bo is not just about eating ordinary chicken rice. It is about experiencing home and local life through a simple yet profound dish that a traveler like me will never forget. If you pass by Samut Prakan, don't forget to stop by and taste Grandma's Hainanese Chicken Rice, and you will know what the true flavor of chicken rice is.
