Eating Bang Bo Stewed Pork with firsthand experience from mr.hotsia
When it comes to local dishes that I, mr.hotsia, love and consider one of my favorites in Samut Prakan province, I must sayBang Bo Stewed Porkis one of the deeply flavorful and uniquely charming tastes. I have had the chance to travel back to my hometown in Bang Bo many times, and every time I taste the stewed pork here, it feels like a journey back to the past filled with the essence of canal-side life and the warmth of a small community.
Bang Bo, Samut Prakan Province, is a community located on a lowland adjacent to Samrong Canal, a main canal connecting to Bang Pakong River and the Gulf of Thailand. The lifestyle here has been tied to water since the days of grandparents. I, mr.hotsia, grew up playing and swimming in Ban Rakat Canal, a tributary of Samrong Canal. The freshness of ingredients and care in cooking have long been cherished values here.
Bang Bo Stewed Pork is not just ordinary stewed pork
The stewed pork in Bang Bo is special. At first glance, it may look like regular stewed pork, but the taste and ingredients are completely different. I, mr.hotsia, tried it at a small roadside shop in Bang Bo Market, which itself is part of a long-standing way of life similar tothe 150-Year-Old Bang Phli Marketthat I have written about before.
The pork used in Bang Bo stewed pork is carefully selected. The pork meat is tender and chewy but not mushy. The pork skin is my favorite part because it has a slightly crunchy texture. The rich stewed broth is simmered with a blend of spices including cinnamon, cardamom, and star anise, producing an aroma that always makes your mouth water.
The Bang Bo stewed pork dish is not only pork; it also includes stewed eggs boiled until the thin shell disappears, revealing the attractive patterns of the egg whites, and smooth fish balls freshly made from Bang Bo's snakehead fish, which I have explained in the articleBang Bo Snakehead Fishabout why the snakehead fish here is famous and delicious enough to be exported nationwide.
Eating Stewed Pork by the Canal and Learning Bang Bo's Way of Life
After enjoying the hot stewed pork until I almost forgot myself, I, mr.hotsia, like to stroll around Bang Bo Market, which is not far from the stewed pork shop. This market is a community market that still preserves the traditional atmosphere of canal-side trade very well, similar to the old market in Bang Phli that I have experienced.150-Year-Old Bang Phli Marketwhich is a gathering place for local products including food, daily necessities, and agricultural tools.
In Bang Bo Market, I saw elderly locals still using rowboats as their main mode of transportation, just as described inThe Fish Trap Contest with Mr. Hotsia On Tour at Bang Bowhere fishing and shrimp trapping in the canal remain ongoing activities for the locals. I also tried trapping fish with Thid Kae that day, which was a fun experience and deepened my understanding of this community.
Memories Connected to the Taste of My Hometown
For me, mr.hotsia, eating Bang Bo stewed pork is not just about food. It is a connection to childhood memories, walking along Ban Rakat Canal where I grew up, seeing the simple continuing lifestyle of the locals, and eating food that reflects the care and dedication of the community.
If you visit Samut Prakan, don't forget to stop by Bang Bo. Not only will you enjoy delicious stewed pork, but you will also experience a warm and simple way of life. The friendliness of the people here will leave you with unforgettable impressions, just like me.
