When talking about Binh Phuoc Province in Vietnam, many may only think of it as a transit town or a route change point before entering the Central Highlands. But for mr.hotsia, a traveler who loves to experience local life, Binh Phuoc is a province worth exploring, full of charm hidden in small details that few tourists know.

The route to Dong Xoai, the capital city of Binh Phuoc

I, mr.hotsia, started my journey from Thu Dau Mot city in Binh Duong Province heading north by bus. The destination was Dong Xoai, the capital city of Binh Phuoc Province. This route took me through wide rice fields and landscapes that gradually changed from lowlands to emerging highlands. It was a simple and peaceful rural atmosphere.

Although Dong Xoai does not have a large bus station like other cities, getting off in the city center is not difficult. There are only about 4-6 hotels here. I chose to stay at a hotel next to Coop Mart, costing about 500 baht per night with air conditioning. However, I must say the cleanliness and cigarette smell in the room still need improvement.

Life in Dong Xoai, more than just a transit town

Dong Xoai is especially lively in the morning when people come out to shop at the city’s morning market. The market is located on a small hill street, an atmosphere perfect for capturing authentic local life. Locals sell goods energetically, including freshwater fish, fruits, and various meats. One highlight I, mr.hotsia, noticed was a separate shop selling dog meat, a culinary culture still present in some northern Vietnamese areas and this region.

This market also sells mangoes, as the name Dong Xoai means mango, though it is not a major product. The morning market atmosphere is filled with bargaining sounds, bicycles, and motorbikes mingling, showing the real life of the town’s people.
