But for me, mr.hotsia, Dong Xoai Market in Bình Phước Province is one of the markets that truly charms and tells the story of Vietnamese life. Although this city is not large or heavily visited like other cities, walking through the morning market here showed me many things that typical markets do not have.

The Dong Xoai morning market is located along the main street hill of the city. It is filled with people shopping from dawn. Both local villagers and small vendors set up their stalls energetically. The market area is quite spacious, with fresh vegetable and fruit stalls. A highlight is the many mango stalls, as the name Dong Xoai itself means “mango.” I saw a variety of mango types neatly arranged for customers to choose from.

Another unique and interesting feature of this market is the clear presence of “dog meat shops,” which I have never encountered before in southern or central Vietnam. Although dog meat consumption is part of the culture in northern Vietnam’s colder regions and some areas, including the central highlands, Dong Xoai is a connection point between the south and the highlands. Therefore, dog meat is openly sold in the morning market here and is considered normal. I, mr.hotsia, recommend travelers visiting here to understand and respect this way of life. Please avoid taking photos or making strange gestures at these shops, as locals consider it normal and a deeply rooted culture.

Fresh food at the market and lifestyle expressed through goods sold

Besides dog meat, the market also has eels and unusual fish I have never seen elsewhere, as well as fresh chicken and duck for sale. Here, I witnessed the real lifestyle of Vietnamese people in Dong Xoai who still maintain traditional ways, even though it is not far from Ho Chi Minh City.

While walking through the market, I chose to try local breakfast from street vendors in front of the market. The market’s bustle is only in the morning

What I noticed about this market is that the bustle only happens in the morning. By late morning, the market quiets down and the crowd gradually decreases, changing the atmosphere clearly. The morning market is when the life of Dong Xoai residents is fully expressed — the hustle, the bargaining voices, and the exchange of goods made me feel like I traveled back to traditional Vietnam.
