Hanoi and the world of Vietnamese flavors you must try
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I will take you to experience the charm of Vietnamese cuisine in the capital city, Hanoi (Hà Nội), which is not only an ancient city full of history but also a hub of authentic Vietnamese food with bold flavors and a homely atmosphere. I have personally wandered and tasted many times until I was deeply impressed.
The atmosphere of food streets and night markets
When I arrived in Hanoi around 8 or 9 PM, I had the chance to stroll through the Night Market located on Hàng Đào Street, a popular shopping and food destination for locals and tourists. The area is filled with street food stalls, the aroma of spices wafting through the air, mixed with the chatter of people shopping. I felt like I had stepped into the true world of Vietnamese cuisine, which is not just about taste but also a culture born from the daily life of Hanoi people.
Hanoi Nem Nuong: The traditional flavor that impressed me
One of the dishes I wholeheartedly recommend is the traditional “Nem Nuong” here, which is distinctly different from what I've had in Thailand and Laos. In Hanoi, marinated pork with spices is grilled until fragrant and served with a clear, slightly sweet broth to dip with fresh vegetables like lettuce, culantro, and pickled vegetables that help cut the richness. I love the freshness of the vegetables and the well-balanced broth. The fried spring rolls here don’t use flour wrappers like in Thailand or Laos but instead use fresh vegetables to wrap. At first, I wondered why it was different, but after trying it, I found it to be a very interesting harmony.
Eating Nem Nuong here reminded me of the story of Vietnamese food passed down to Thailand, especially Nem Nuong, which originated near Udon Thani province, not far from Vientiane, where I have traveled before. I wrote about itBackpacking in Hanoi 2016If anyone is interested, you can check it out.
Dong Xuan Market: A hub for street food and snacks
After the night market, I also passed by Đồng Xuân Market, an old market in Hanoi. This place is not only a fresh market but also has many street food stalls to try. I recommend trying the freshly grilled cuttlefish, which smells so good that people line up to wait. There is also white rice noodles, commonly eaten with fresh vegetables and spicy dipping sauce. Anyone who loves authentic bold Vietnamese flavors should not miss this.
Transportation and traveling in Hanoi
For traveling into Hanoi city, I used Lao Airlines from Vientiane to Hanoi, with a ticket price around 4000 baht. It was very convenient and fast. Upon arrival at Hanoi airport, I recommend taking bus number 17 parked in front of the airport because it is economical and fairly punctual. Although it takes a bit longer, it is more worthwhile than taking a taxi or van, which can be expensive and require waiting.
In Hanoi city, I enjoy walking around the area called “Phố Cổ” (Old Quarter), which is a community with local food shops and affordable accommodations, suitable for travelers who want to truly experience local life. Vietnamese food in Hanoi: Not just eating, but an experience
What impressed me most about eating in Hanoi is that every dish not only offers great taste but also clearly reflects the culture and lifestyle of Northern Vietnamese people. The food here is fresh and uses a lot more fresh vegetables than elsewhere, such as pickled vegetables and various fresh greens that enhance flavor and variety in meals.
I also watched a video clip recording the atmosphere of eating Vietnamese food in Hanoi, which should help visualize it better. Anyone interested can watch athanoi vietnamese food (Delicious Vietnamese Restaurants)which I filmed myself.
Connecting experiences with travel in Southern Vietnam
Many people may have heard of Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon before, but actually, the capital of Vietnam is Hanoi, located in the northern part of the country. I have written about it inHo Chi Minh Travel InformationandBuying Tours in Ho Chi Minhabout how traveling in Southern and Northern Vietnam offers different charms. I have traveled many times to hunt for authentic food and culture.
Summary: Hanoi, an ancient city with new flavors you must try
If you ask me how Vietnamese food in Hanoi differs from elsewhere, the answer is the freshness of ingredients, the use of a variety of fresh vegetables, and a slightly sweet taste that pairs well with marinated pork and clear broth, which I really like. Additionally, the street dining atmosphere and night markets add a unique charm that makes traveling here unlike any other.
