Hanoi Lake, Sword Lake: The Heart of Hanoi Life by mr.hotsia

When talking about Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, what mr.hotsia always finds impressive and memorable is “Sword Lake,” or as locals simply call it “Hanoi Lake.” This medium-sized lake located in the heart of the city is not grand like many large city lakes around the world, but it holds charm and deep meaning as a recreational area and cultural symbol for the people of Hanoi.

I, mr.hotsia, have visited here many times, from morning till evening, and each time of day at Sword Lake has a lively and remarkably different atmosphere.

Morning to Evening: Exercise and Hanoi Lifestyle

In the early morning and evening, this lake becomes a gathering spot for Hanoi people of all ages who come to exercise energetically. I clearly remember once walking around the lake in the morning, seeing elderly men and women dressed in simple yet energetic sportswear, teenagers and young adults in colorful warm-up suits running around the lake joyfully. Some wore personal headphones, others walked slowly chatting in groups in a friendly manner.

The lake is not very large. I, mr.hotsia, have tried running around it myself; it takes about half an hour to complete a lap. But the path around the lake is shaded by large trees and the air is fresh, making exercise a pleasant experience. Especially if you come during Hanoi’s winter when the weather is cool and comfortable, it’s truly delightful.

Nighttime: Romantic Atmosphere and Beautiful Lights

When the sun sets, Sword Lake is decorated with lights from the bridge and the One Pillar Pagoda in the middle of the water, which is a key highlight that tourists and Vietnamese alike do not miss visiting and photographing to capture this beautiful scene.

I, mr.hotsia, enjoy walking by the lake at night because I can feel the quiet and romantic atmosphere. Many tourists, both Vietnamese and foreigners, come to take photos or sit chatting while stargazing. Some couples take the opportunity to sit closely by the lake warmly. Sometimes local artists come to sing and create a soothing ambiance.

Sword Lake as Part of Hanoi Life

For me, mr.hotsia, Sword Lake is not just an ordinary tourist spot; it is the “heart” of Hanoi people that clearly reflects the lifestyle and culture of this capital city. Walking here feels like absorbing the rhythm of city life. Seeing children playing in the water, hearing the laughter of elderly people exercising, and the peacefulness of the One Pillar Pagoda standing proudly in the water all remind me of the simple yet charming essence of Hanoi.

Travel and Advice from mr.hotsia

If you plan to visit Hanoi and want to experience the atmosphere by Sword Lake, I recommend coming in the morning or evening. Besides watching Hanoi people exercising, these are the best times weather-wise, especially in winter or spring. Getting to the lake is very easy since it is in the city center and you can walk from major accommodation areas like Phu Tay Ho or the Old Quarter comfortably.

Experience Authentic Vietnamese Food Near Sword Lake

After walking around the lake and soaking in the atmosphere, don’t forget to try authentic Vietnamese dishes in this area. I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to try “Vietnamese Grilled Button Squid” with its mild, aromatic spices, perfect as a snack; or “Vietnamese Chicken Biryani” with unique fragrant spices; and “Nem Fang,” a popular Vietnamese appetizer you can find at local restaurants around the lake.

If you’re interested in watching full Vietnamese food clips, I, mr.hotsia, have recommendations inVietnamese Grilled Button Squid, Vietnamese Chicken BiryaniandVietnamese Nem Fangwhich allow you to experience authentic food atmospheres from my real field experiences.

Sword Lake is not just a landmark in Hanoi but a place where you truly experience the lifestyle of Northern Vietnamese people—from morning exercise, evening social gatherings, to the beauty of night lights. I, mr.hotsia, believe that if you visit here once, you will feel like a part of this capital city forever.
