Water puppetry, a traditional folk art in Hanoi that mr.hotsia must share
If you have the chance to visit Hanoi, the capital full of stories and culture of northern Vietnam, the must-see performance that mr.hotsia recommends you watch with your own eyes isThe Water Puppet Showwhich is considered a living and vibrant artistic heritage to this day.
From my experience watching it, water puppetry seems to be a play created by Vietnamese farmers for relaxation during the rice planting season, similar to our local folk traditions. But what puzzles me is why our country, which also has rice fields, does not have water puppetry performances. The answer might lie in different lifestyles and cultures. However, I must say that after watching it, the enjoyment and wonder of this performance made me forget that question entirely.
Atmosphere and performance at the theater by Hoan Kiem Lake
Before the water puppet show begins, there is a traditional Vietnamese music performance that is deeply moving. The music is so beautiful that the audience in the theater falls completely silent, focusing on the rhythm and melody. Then, Vietnamese songs play softly alongside the puppet show filled with dazzling lights, colors, and sounds. The puppetry technique is very delicate and complex, and sometimes I was amazed at how the scenes made the puppets seem truly alive.
This performance is held in a small theater by Hoan Kiem Lake on Dinh Tien Hoang Street. This is an important venue preserving this art form and allowing visitors to Hanoi to watch it up close.
Mechanics and intricacy of water puppetry
What impressed mr.hotsia the most is the puppet control mechanism hidden behind bamboo blinds. The puppeteers stay behind the stage, using wooden rods extending outside the stage to control lightweight wooden puppets that float smoothly on the water surface. The puppets' movements appear lifelike, with gestures and emotions, whether walking, fishing, or playing with aquatic animals. Puppeteering requires great skill to avoid showing the controlling rods. This charm made me feel like watching a living drama.
Travel and atmosphere around Hanoi
I, mr.hotsia, often visit Hanoi as it is the center of northern Vietnam, conveniently accessible by plane and bus. On my latest trip, I flew with Lao Airlines from Vientiane to Hanoi. The fare was about 4,000 baht, which is reasonable for international travel in this region.
Upon arriving at Hanoi airport, you can take bus number 17 right outside the airport to save on transportation costs to the city center. Although it takes longer than a taxi, I find it worthwhile and offers a better chance to experience the local atmosphere.
In Hanoi, I usually stay in thePhu Tay Ho areawhich is suitable for backpackers. It offers affordable accommodations, local eateries, and a relatively calm atmosphere, perfect for those wanting to experience authentic Hanoi life.
