Visit Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest pagoda in Hanoi

When talking about traveling in Hanoi, one place I, mr.hotsia, never miss isTran Quoc Pagodaalso known as Tran Quoc Pagoda. This ancient pagoda is located on a small island in the largest freshwater lake in Hanoi. It has a history of over 1,500 years and is considered the oldest temple in the Vietnamese capital.

The first time I arrived in Hanoi, I bought a one-day tour for 750 baht, which took me to several places such as Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Ho Chi Minh's birthplace, and the Vietnam Ethnology Museum. But standing at Tran Quoc Pagoda was the most impressive moment because this place is full of peace and the faith of many Buddhists who come to worship and pray.

How to get to Tran Quoc Pagoda?

Tran Quoc Pagoda is located on a small island in a freshwater lake calledWest Lake(West Lake), the largest lake in Hanoi. Traveling here is very easy. You can take a taxi or, if you want to save money and experience the city atmosphere, I recommend taking various bus lines to the lake and then walking a short distance.

On my trip, even though I bought a tour, I decided to separate from the group to avoid shopping stops I didn’t like and walked around Dong Xuan Market, a famous market nearby. This helped complete my experience of traveling in the capital city.

Interesting Pagoda and Structures

Tran Quoc Pagoda was first built between 544-548 AD, meaning it has a history of more than 1,500 years. The current large pagoda we see was built in 1998, standing 15 meters tall with 11 floors. Each floor has 6 arched doors, and inside each door is a Buddha statue.

Interestingly, this pagoda was built to harmonize with a large Bodhi tree gifted by the President of India in 1959 during his visit to Hanoi. It symbolizes the good relationship and cultural exchange between the two countries.

Atmosphere and Feelings When Visiting

When I walked into the temple area, I felt a strong sense of peace and faith. The surroundings of the lake are lush with green trees and birdsong, making every step incredibly relaxing. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy sitting to watch the lake view and taking photos of the pagoda from various angles.

During my visit, Hanoi was not very crowded with tourists, allowing me to experience true tranquility, unlike other busy and bustling markets or tourist areas.

Tour Recommendations and Traveling in Hanoi

For those who want a convenient Hanoi trip, I, mr.hotsia, recommend buying a one-day tour that includes important sites like the tour I took, which covered Tran Quoc Pagoda, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and the Vietnam Ethnology Museum. The price was about 750 baht, which is very worthwhile, especially for first-time visitors.

But if you want to travel independently and experience Hanoi’s local lifestyle more, I recommend readingHanoi Travel Guide 2013andBackpacking Hanoi 2016my own guides, which include travel tips, accommodations, and other interesting stories.

Nearby Food and Markets Not to Miss

After visiting Tran Quoc Pagoda, I, mr.hotsia, often stroll around Dong Xuan Market, which is nearby. It is a fresh market full of local food and fresh ingredients. This market is perfect for those who want to try authentic Vietnamese food at affordable prices.

Summary of Impressions

Tran Quoc Pagoda is not just an ordinary tourist spot; it is a deep historical and religious connection of Northern Vietnam. Visiting here made me, mr.hotsia, feel peace and meaning beyond just the beauty of the architecture.

If you have a chance to visit Hanoi, don’t forget to stop by Tran Quoc Pagoda and explore the local markets around to truly experience the atmosphere of the Vietnamese capital.
