Ferry crossing from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc Island: Gateway to Southern Vietnam's sea

If you are planning to travel from the coastal town of Ha Tien to Phu Quoc Island, I, mr.hotsia, have firsthand experience to share to help make your trip more convenient and enjoyable. The ferry from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc is a popular route among tourists and locals alike, as it serves as a key gateway in Kiên Giang province in southern Vietnam, an area rich with coastal lifestyle and fresh seafood.

Preparing before boarding the ferry at Ha Tien pier

The pier used for traveling to Phu Quoc Island is located opposite the fish market in Ha Tien town. I, mr.hotsia, recommend taking a motorbike rather than walking because I once tried walking across the bridge from the town to the pier but encountered obstacles that forced a long detour, wasting a lot of time compared to the convenience and speed of a motorbike.

The ferry service uses small, fast boats—not hydrofoils—but they are air-conditioned and have restrooms at the rear. The journey takes about an hour and a half. The fare is approximately 230,000 VND per trip. There are daily departures at 08:00 and 13:00, and I, mr.hotsia, recommend choosing the time that best fits your travel plans.

Choosing the pier on Phu Quoc Island: Nam Ninh or another pier?

Upon arrival at Phu Quoc Island, there are two piers to choose from, about 4 kilometers apart. The first pier is called Nam Ninh, with a fare of 210,000 VND, while the other pier charges 230,000 VND. I, mr.hotsia, have used the Nam Ninh pier and recommend it because it is closer to the lively fresh market and community. Here, you can truly experience local life, such as the fresh seafood market and even see live seahorses sold for about 75 baht each.

After disembarking on the island's east side, you need to travel about 16 kilometers to the main town on the west side. There are taxis and motorbike taxis available, but I, mr.hotsia, recommend taking a taxi for convenience and to avoid the dusty roads on the island.

The charm of the journey and coastal lifestyle

While on the ferry, I, mr.hotsia, really enjoy standing at the back of the boat to take in the view. The open sea atmosphere with cool breezes is refreshing. Although some people smoke, when the boat is about to depart or dock, staff ask everyone to return to the cabin for safety.

As a traveler who loves to experience local life, I, mr.hotsia, took the opportunity to visit the fish and fresh markets near Ha Tien pier before boarding. There is a wide variety of fresh seafood, such as large conch and grilled Vietnamese blood cockles, which I have tried and really enjoyed (read more aboutHa Tien Seafood, Vietnam)

Arriving at Phu Quoc Island: The start of adventure and southern sea flavors

Phu Quoc Island is a paradise for seafood lovers and nature enthusiasts. I, mr.hotsia, spent a day riding a motorbike around the island, discovering beautiful beaches and locals still using traditional squid fishing methods. I had the chance to buy fresh squid and fry it by the sea for an unforgettable lunch (read aboutMotorbike touring Phu Quoc IslandandPhu Quoc Seafood)

There are many seafood restaurants on Phu Quoc Island along the Night Plaza walking street, open from early evening until late. The seafood is affordable and fresh, including shrimp, fish, squid, and Vietnamese hot pot dishes that I recommend trying at least once.

Additional information and ferry ticket booking

For those who want more information or to book ferry tickets to Phu Quoc Island, several ferry companies operate services and allow convenient advance booking (see more details atRach Gia City, Kiên Giang Provinceand my articleBoat trip from Phu Quoc island to Rach Gia, South Vietnam)

In summary, traveling from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc Island is not just a simple sea crossing but a gateway to experiences filled with the essence of fishing village life, fresh markets, and fresh seafood flavors, along with adventures on an island with beautiful beaches and impressively preserved nature.
