Ha Tien City (Ha Tien) Vietnam: Experience riverside life and fresh seafood
If you ask me, mr.hotsia, where in southern Vietnam still keeps the true local vibe without being crowded or too busy, the cityHa Tienor Ha Tien is the answer I firmly confirm from my many visits. It is located in Kiên Giang province near the border with Cambodia. This small riverside town has an interesting history and fresh seafood you must try.
History and Atmosphere of Ha Tien
This city was founded by a group of Chinese people fleeing political turmoil from the Ming dynasty. They established roots here with support from the Khmer king of that era. This Chinese group started markets and businesses that gradually grew Ha Tien into an important trading town before it was eventually incorporated into Vietnam.
I, mr.hotsia, have strolled along the Ha Tien riverbank in the evening. The atmosphere is peaceful, locals live simply, and there are lively fish markets and night markets especially in the morning and evening where you can see fresh seafood and the lifestyle of people familiar with the river and sea.
Getting to Ha Tien
For my trip, I came from Cambodia’s Kampot province by renting a 3-wheeled tuk-tuk from Kep for about 10 USD per person (20 USD for two). The distance from Kampot to the Ha Tien border checkpoint is about 50 km, then another 7 km to the town center. It’s very convenient with motorcycle taxis available. Alternatively, you can come from Vietnam by boat from Phu Quoc Island with a fare around 210,000 dong, or by bus from Rach Gia city.
The transportation system in southern Vietnam I experienced during my trip is good and comfortable, similar to home. Knowing some basic Vietnamese words and numbers helps a lot with bargaining and communicating with locals.
Accommodation in Ha Tien
Most hotels in town are near the fish market, with prices starting around 300 baht per night. This is very good value as they offer full amenities including air conditioning, TV, and hot water. I, mr.hotsia, stayed here one night preparing to take a boat to Phu Quoc Island, which allowed me to fully experience the riverside town lifestyle.
Recommended Walking Tours and Attractions in Ha Tien
Since the town is not very big, walking is the best way to explore the riverside atmosphere and fish market. Most tourist accommodations are near the fish market, which is the community’s colorful hub with fresh seafood. There is also an old church that is a key landmark to visit. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy walking to observe local life, shopping for food at the fish market, and tasting seafood at the night market near the clock tower.
Seafood and Food in Ha Tien
Speaking of seafood here, I, mr.hotsia, must say it is very diverse and fresh. The night market next to the clock tower is full of seafood vendors selling clams, fish, shrimp, and squid fresh from the sea, popular with locals and tourists alike. For example, the Vietnamese specialty of winged clams or grilled Vietnamese cockles that are boiled and grilled to fragrant perfection, which I tried and was very impressed by (read more details atHa Tien Seafood Vietnam)
Besides seafood, the local fruits are also interesting with a variety available seasonally, adding flavor and fond memories to my visit to Ha Tien.
Connecting Trips to Phu Quoc Island and Nearby Towns
If you visit Ha Tien, don’t miss traveling on toPhu Quoc Islandwhich is famous for fresh seafood and beautiful beach atmosphere. I, mr.hotsia, spent a day riding a motorcycle around the island and recommend trying the seafood as I described inPhu Quoc Seafood Articlewhich will complete your southern Vietnamese culinary experience.
Another interesting town in Kiên Giang province isRach Gia Citywhich is the transportation and economic center of the province. Traveling from Phu Quoc to Rach Gia by boat is convenient, and there are also local dishes worth trying there.
Summary of Experience from mr.hotsia
For me, visiting Ha Tien felt like stepping back to a side of Vietnam less touched by foreign tourists. The simplicity of riverside life, fish markets, and fresh seafood made me feel closely connected to the local way of life.
If you enjoy unhurried travel, love seafood, and appreciate small towns that still preserve authentic local culture, I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting Ha Tien once—you will surely love this town as I do.
