Long Beach Phu Quoc Island Vietnam: Crab Trapping Spot and Travel Experience by Mr.Hotsia

Phu Quoc Island in Kiên Giang Province, Vietnam is one of the islands where I, Mr.Hotsia, had the chance to spend time riding a motorcycle almost all around the island. The impression I got from this trip was not only the clean white sandy beaches and the turquoise sea but also the slow and simple lifestyle of the locals, especially when I stopped by Long Beach, a popular long beach on this island.

Long Beach is a beautifully stretched beach along the Gulf of Thailand on the west side of Phu Quoc Island. A highlight I encountered and want to share is the crab trapping by the local fishermen along the beach, which truly reflects the traditional fishing lifestyle. I saw locals using simple crab traps made from bamboo and traditional ropes. They set the traps in the deep sea not far from the shore. You can walk around to watch the crab trapping method and learn about this simple way of life up close.

That day, I, Mr.Hotsia, rode my motorcycle along the Long Beach coastal road. The sea breeze was cool and comfortable, and the sunlight was not too hot—perfect for taking breaks, snapping photos, and watching the locals carefully trap crabs. At that moment, I talked with the locals, bought fresh crabs, and asked them to fry it for me by the sea. The taste of freshly fried crab right on the beach with hot steamed rice they kindly provided is a memory I will never forget.

How to Travel and Rent Motorcycles on Phu Quoc Island

Traveling to Phu Quoc Island is very convenient, especially if you come from Rach Gia, the capital city of Kiên Giang Province and the economic center of the Mekong Delta. The boat trip from Rach Gia to Phu Quoc takes about 2-3 hours, which I have detailed in an article.Rach Gia City, Kiên Giang Province, Vietnamin detail

Upon arriving at Phu Quoc, I recommend renting a motorcycle to tour around the island for convenience and to truly experience the local atmosphere. Renting a motorcycle here is very easy. I rented directly from the hotel, costing about 100,000 dong (150 baht) per day for manual gear and 150,000 dong for automatic gear. No documents are required other than payment and agreeing on rental and return times. However, I recommend returning the bike before dark to avoid theft issues, as there is no theft insurance like in big cities. Riding a motorcycle in Phu Quoc is similar to other places in Vietnam: drive on the right lane and always wear a helmet, which I consider a strict rule.

Fresh Seafood from Phu Quoc Island

Phu Quoc Island is famous for fresh seafood at affordable prices. I, Mr.Hotsia, stopped to taste seafood several times, especially at the seafood street or the Night Plaza zone, which has over 20 seafood restaurants offering barbecue, hot pot, or "lao" in Vietnamese style, filled with fresh shrimp, fish, squid, and shellfish caught daily by locals.

One of the dishes I was impressed with was freshly grilled button squid caught by locals from the beach, grilled over hot charcoal with a fragrant aroma that was irresistible. I had to order it with hot steamed rice that the locals kindly provided. There was also grilled eggplant that pairs well with seafood to cut through the richness. I also recommend trying the seafood hot pot or "lao," which is affordable at about 100,000 dong (150 baht), including fish, shrimp, squid, glass noodles, and fresh vegetables. It’s a very worthwhile meal for travelers who love fresh seafood.

Feelings and Atmosphere on Phu Quoc Island

While riding a motorcycle around the island, I, Mr.Hotsia, stopped to take photos of beautiful beaches, visited fishing villages, and harbors that have well-preserved their original condition. It felt like stepping back in time, seeing people living simply, unhurried but full of happiness with what they have, giving a deeply relaxing feeling.

I stopped at a fresh market in a small village to observe local life and tried French bread with two eggs mixed with chili and a bit of pork, a breakfast I really liked. Paired with strong Vietnamese coffee, it was another experience not to miss when visiting Phu Quoc Island.

If you like adventurous travel mixed with experiencing the real lifestyle of locals, Phu Quoc Island is a perfect answer. I recommend trying to ride a motorcycle around the island like me and don’t forget to stop by Long Beach to watch traditional crab trapping, enjoy the beautiful sea atmosphere, and fresh seafood here.
