Rach Gia Roast Duck, Crab Spirit Noodles - A special menu from the heart of mr.hotsia

When talking about Kiên Giang province in Vietnam, many might think of the famous Phu Quoc Island or Ha Tien city known for fresh seafood. But for me, mr.hotsia, Rach Gia city is an equally impressive destination, especially for the food I got to taste on this trip, particularly the roast duck here and the unique Crab Spirit Noodles, which is an experience I want to share in detail.

Rach Gia is a coastal city located in the Mekong Delta and serves as the economic and cultural center of Kiên Giang province. It has a bustling port and a community that still maintains a simple way of life. I traveled here by boat from Phu Quoc Island, a convenient route that allowed me to closely observe the coastal fishing lifestyle. Roast Duck Street - An Extraordinary Roast Duck Alley

The first thing that caught my eye in Rach Gia was the roast duck street right in front of the city center monument. This area has about 6-10 roast duck shops lined up, mostly focusing on take-away sales since most locals prefer eating at home, so there are few tables for dine-in.

I chose to buy half a roast duck boxed because I wanted to enjoy it fully, then walked to find a roadside seat near a rice shop, ordered a plate of hot steamed rice, and sat down to eat the roast duck comfortably. The aroma of the roast duck filled the air. I think it was one of the coolest moments with the most authentic local atmosphere.

The price of roast duck here is quite affordable, about 330 baht per duck, which is large and filling. I noticed they have a special secret: they put wood ear mushrooms inside the duck’s cavity before roasting, making the meat tender, juicy, and uniquely fragrant. The wood ear mushrooms add a flavor dimension and softness I have never encountered anywhere else.

The taste of the roast duck here is not just about the crispy skin but also the tender, smooth meat inside that made me give it a thumbs up. For anyone visiting Rach Gia, this roast duck street is a must-try dish. I guarantee you will be impressed and never forget it.

Crab Spirit Noodles - A Dish That Still Puzzles Me

Another famous dish in this city is “Crab Spirit Noodles.” The name sounds strange and exciting. I was eager to try it, but after tasting, it was a new and unfamiliar experience for me.

This noodle dish is special because you hardly see clear crab meat. Instead of normal crab chunks, they use finely minced crab that is seasoned and cooked into a dark broth, which I think comes from crab paste or crab roe that has been pounded and simmered to create a very intense flavor.

Crab Spirit Noodles are widely sold in Rach Gia, and although it is a signature dish, the taste didn’t quite appeal to me, especially due to the strong aroma and flavor that sometimes made it less palatable compared to the roast duck on the same street.

If you want to try something new and experience the unique local Vietnamese cuisine here, I recommend giving it a shot. But be prepared, as it’s not the kind of noodle soup we usually know.

Lifestyle and Atmosphere of Rach Gia

I like the atmosphere of Rach Gia, which still retains simplicity and traditional village life. Most people here live peacefully, and the food truly reflects the local identity.

The markets here are not as large as tourist cities but are full of fresh produce and local ingredients. I recommend strolling through the market and tasting food at small shops to see authentic Vietnamese cooking methods, different from what we see in big cities.

For those interested in fresh seafood, after visiting Phu Quoc Island or Ha Tien city, you can stop by to complete your meal with roast duck and noodles here. (Check out the seafood atmosphere in Ha Tien city atHa Tien City Seafood, Vietnam)

Summary of Experience from mr.hotsia

For me, Rach Gia roast duck is something I want to come back to try again because of its rich flavor and aroma combined with wood ear mushrooms, which is rare and truly delicious. Also, the price is very reasonable compared to the quality.

As for Crab Spirit Noodles, although it’s not my favorite dish, it is another experience that shows the diversity of Vietnamese cuisine in this area. Visiting Rach Gia is like opening a new and intriguing culinary world.

If you want to experience the lifestyle and authentic local flavors, mr.hotsia recommends planning a trip to this city to feel the essence of the Mekong Delta up close. I assure you won’t be disappointed.
