Rach Gia Port, the starting point to Phu Quoc Island

When talking about traveling to Phu Quoc Island, one important gateway that many travelers may not be very familiar with is Rach Gia Port, or as I, mr.hotsia, commonly call it, Rach Gia city, located in Kiên Giang province of southern Vietnam. In fact, this city is a maritime hub that conveniently connects Phu Quoc Island with the mainland.

I arrived in Rach Gia by boat from Phu Quoc Island to the mainland to explore the port and the surrounding atmosphere here. I must say this city has a simple charm of a coastal community blending the fishing lifestyle and water transportation harmoniously.

Port and travel to Phu Quoc Island

The port in Rach Gia is located at the river mouth area in the Mekong Delta. Passenger boats depart to Phu Quoc Island about 3 times a day, taking approximately 3 hours per trip. The fare is around 500 baht (about 300,000 Vietnamese dong), which is considered worthwhile given the convenience and safety of this route.

The port atmosphere is lively, with about 3 small guesthouses nearby. I, mr.hotsia, recommend that if you have time, you should try staying here for a night because the prices are affordable and the homely atmosphere allows you to truly experience the local lifestyle more than staying in a big city.

Besides boat services to Phu Quoc Island, the port is also a ticket sales point for bus travel to major cities such as Ho Chi Minh City or other nearby provinces. This makes the port a comprehensive travel hub.

Rach Gia, a coastal city in the Mekong Delta

Rach Gia is located on the coastal area of the Mekong Delta, with a population of about 23,000 people. It is the administrative and economic center of Kiên Giang province, featuring an important pier and connections to other cities in the region.

During my visit to Rach Gia, I noticed that locals enjoy simple dishes such asCam Tum (grilled pork rice)or fragrant grilled pork rice bowls, as well as spicy and distinctive crab noodle soup. There is also a famous roasted duck street. I personally tried roasted duck at a roadside stall; the flavor was rich and the meat very tender, which was another memorable experience from this city.

If you want to know more about Rach Gia, I, mr.hotsia, have shared detailed stories and atmosphere in an articleRach Gia City, Kiên Giang Province, Vietnamwhich I recommend you read to better understand the lifestyle and background of this city.

Travel experience to Phu Quoc Island from Rach Gia

Taking the boat from Rach Gia Port to Phu Quoc Island is a fun and exciting journey. Boats depart about 3 times a day, with departure times spread from early morning to late afternoon. I, mr.hotsia, chose the morning trip to have enough time to explore Phu Quoc Island fully on the same day.

On the boat, the atmosphere is relaxed. Most passengers are tourists and locals traveling for business or leisure. The trip takes about 3 hours with beautiful sea and coastal views to enjoy along the way.

Upon arriving at the Phu Quoc Island port, you need to take a vehicle to the main town on the west side, about 16 kilometers away. You can choose taxis or motorbike taxis as convenient. For adventure lovers, I, mr.hotsia, recommend renting a motorbike to tour the island and fully experience the life and nature on your own.Read more about motorbike touring Phu Quoc Island

Guesthouses and accommodations near Rach Gia Port

If you plan to stay overnight in Rach Gia, I, mr.hotsia, recommend choosing accommodations near the port because there are many affordable and comfortable guesthouses. This area suits travelers who want a simple rest and to be close to the riverside and seaside atmosphere.

Staying here also allows you to conveniently catch the morning boat to Phu Quoc Island without rushing on travel day and gives you a chance to experience the interesting small community lifestyle.

Experience the taste of seafood on Phu Quoc Island

When you arrive at Phu Quoc Island, don't miss the fresh seafood, which is very famous here. There are seafood restaurants lined up along the walking street or night plaza, with more than 20 options mostly focusing on seafood barbecue, hot pots, or what locals call 'lao'.

I, mr.hotsia, have tried freshly grilled large snapper, fragrant and delicious, or the 'lao' hot pot filled with fish, squid, shrimp, glass noodles, and fresh vegetables with authentic spicy Vietnamese flavors. It is a very worthwhile meal for seafood-loving travelers.Read stories and reviews of Phu Quoc Island seafoodthat I have written

Additionally, if you want to try unusual dishes or experience traditional Vietnamese seafood flavors, you should visit the night market in Ha Tien city, not far from Rach Gia. There, you can find a variety of shellfish dishes, including the conical shell which I have tried and was very impressed by.Read more about Ha Tien seafood
