Phu Quoc Morning Market: The charm of a seaside fresh market you must experience

If you have the chance to travel to Phu Quoc Island, Kiên Giang Province, Vietnam, one thing that mr.hotsia highly recommends you must not miss is visiting themorning marketof this island. This is not just an ordinary market but a lively place full of local life and fresh seafood that is hard to find elsewhere.

Phu Quoc has several fresh markets scattered across different towns. The main markets where I truly experienced life and was deeply impressed are three, which I would like to share.

1. Ham Ninh Town Market: Seaside with intriguing new discoveries

If you take a boat from the Vietnamese mainland and arrive at Ham Ninh town, you will experience a small seaside market full of various fresh items. Here, you can find unusual things such aslive seahorseswhich I saw being sold for about 75 Thai Baht each. These are rarely seen in other general markets. Additionally, there are dried seahorses, starfish, and many other exotic sea creatures, perfect for those wanting to try something new or looking for unique souvenirs.

Ham Ninh Market is not large or overwhelming but has charm in its simplicity and the local lifestyle of the villagers. I once strolled through this market in the morning, enjoying the scent of fresh seafood and the sound of people chatting in Vietnamese, which was very pleasant.

2. Duong Dong Town Market: The lively fresh market at the heart of the island

When it comes to the largest and most vibrant fresh market on Phu Quoc Island, it has to be the market in Duong Dong town. This is the center for trading fresh seafood among locals, including fish, shrimp, squid, and shellfish used daily in households. This market is not as big as the Ha Tien fish market, but what makes Duong Dong Market stand out is its winding market paths filled with motorcycles, bicycles, and bustling crowds, creating a chaotic yet enjoyable atmosphere.

mr.hotsia once rode a motorcycle through this route personally. It was a great beginner experience for motorcycling in Vietnam because besides experiencing the fresh market atmosphere, I also learned how to navigate crowded streets and narrow roads.

Getting to this market is very easy. Just walk along the seafood street to the end, then turn left. Walk a bit further to find a temporary bridge crossing the river. This bridge allows cars to cross from 8:30 AM but closes at night to let fishing boats pass. At night, it is only accessible to pedestrians, motorcycles, and bicycles. This small charm makes the market lively and well-organized.

3. An Thoi Quoy Town Market: The quiet old town market at the southern tip

Another market I recommend is the one in An Thoi Quoy town, located at the southernmost tip of Phu Quoc Island. This market differs from the two mentioned above because it is less visited by tourists, preserving its traditional and peaceful atmosphere. It is ideal for those who want to truly experience local life.

I arrived at this market in the afternoon and found the hustle had lessened. However, if you have the chance to visit in the morning, you will see a large pier filled with fishing boats and also the Vietnamese naval base, which is very interesting for those who enjoy learning about coastal town stories.

Fresh seafood at the market and mr.hotsia's impressions

Speaking of Phu Quoc morning market, you must not miss the fresh seafood. This place is famous for its freshness and very affordable prices compared to quality. I once ordered a large fresh sea bass for only 200 Baht and big mussels freshly caught by vendors, along with a seafood hot pot containing squid, shrimp, glass noodles, and fresh vegetables. This dish cost only about 150 Baht, making it a very worthwhile meal for seafood lovers.

Delicious dishes I recommend trying at Phu Quoc morning market arePhu Quoc seafoodwhich includes both barbecue and Vietnamese hot pot, as well as grilled eggplant with a sweet aroma that pairs excellently with fresh seafood to balance the flavors. For wine lovers, I recommend trying affordable Dalat wine easily found at the market, which will surprisingly enhance your meal experience.

Travel and unique experiences

For travelers who want to truly experience fresh markets and the lifestyle of Phu Quoc locals, I recommend renting a motorcycle to ride around the island. This allows you to stop at any market you like. Renting a motorcycle here is very easy, requiring no complicated documents, just payment and agreeing on the return time (rental price is about 150 Baht per day). I have also written an articleMotorcycling around Phu Quoc Islandthat helps you better understand life on this island.

Riding a motorcycle through the Duong Dong fresh market is a fun challenge because you have to dodge people, bicycles, and other motorcycles. It is a great way to learn how to live like a local, an experience I will never forget.

Summary of impressions from mr.hotsia
