The vibrant night atmosphere at Ha Tien Market, Kiên Giang Province

For me, mr.hotsia, visiting the Ha Tien night market in Kiên Giang Province, Vietnam, was one of the most impressive experiences. This night market is located near the clock tower in the city center, a spot where locals and travelers like me come to enjoy delicious food late into the night.

I strolled past various food stalls lining the narrow street, including made-to-order dishes, fresh stir-fried vegetables, fresh seafood, and Vietnamese stir-fried noodles which I couldn’t resist ordering. The highlight of this market is the wide variety of options and very affordable prices. For example, a large plate of stir-fried squid cost me only 75 baht.

There are also stalls selling plain rice, known locally as "Giem," which you can order separately to fill up comfortably. And of course, local Vietnamese beer like "Baba" or "333" as locals call it — where "Ba" means the number 3. A cold glass paired with delicious food makes the night market atmosphere here complete and lively.

Traditional Seafood Cooking Methods at the Night Market

What I really enjoyed was seeing how fresh seafood is prepared here, especially in the grilled seafood section. They use charcoal or traditional clay stoves to grill squid, shrimp, and various shellfish. This method fills the air with the aroma of seafood and tastes much better than modern gas stoves. I once ordered Vietnamese stir-fried noodles cooked on a gas stove, but watching and tasting grilled seafood here is a completely different experience.

For more details on seafood dishes, I have written aboutHa Tien Seafoodwhich features large horned clams and Vietnamese-style grilled blood cockles. They boil the shellfish until cooked, then remove the meat to season it before stuffing it back into the shell and grilling again to keep it hot and flavorful when eaten. Watching this process shows the dedication and care of the cooks here.

Fish Market and Riverside Life at To Chou River

Near the night market, I visited the fish market by the To Chou River, a large market focusing on fresh sea fish, shrimp, squid, and various shellfish caught that day. I saw a large sea turtle for sale with blood flowing from its eyes, which was very sad to see. This reminded me of the movie Nemo, where the turtle guides the journey across the ocean.

The freshwater fish section is equally colorful. I saw large snakehead fish weighing about half a kilogram, red herons, frogs, chickens, and ducks sold live. The market atmosphere is full of life and local product variety, with plenty of fruits and vegetables, much like markets back home in Thailand. For those who enjoy photography or making video clips, this place is very interesting. I took many shots myself.

Connecting Travel with Kiên Giang Province and Phu Quoc Island

Ha Tien is not far from Rach Gia, the main city of Kiên Giang Province, which I have written about in the articleRach Gia City, Kiên Giang Province, Vietnama coastal city at the Mekong Delta with a port for traveling to Phu Quoc Island.

If you visit Ha Tien and want to extend your fresh seafood experience, don’t miss Phu Quoc Island. This island is famous for fresh and affordable seafood. You can read stories and recommendations in the articlePhu Quoc Island Seafoodwhere I spent a full day riding a motorbike around the island tasting various seafood dishes.

Strolling and Late-Night Dining at Ha Tien Night Market

I recommend visiting the night market from early evening until late night because the atmosphere is filled with fragrant food aromas and the chatter of locals, making you feel like you’re truly experiencing southern Vietnamese life. Ordering food is simple — just point to the dishes you want. No need to worry about language barriers. Prices are reasonable and not too expensive.

For those who enjoy videos or Vietnamese food clips, I have a link to a video of Vietnamese grilled button squid that I filmed. You can watch it here:Vietnamese Grilled Button SquidI guarantee it will make your mouth water.

Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia

If you love fresh, flavorful seafood in a peaceful local community atmosphere, Ha Tien Night Market is an excellent choice. Besides enjoying delicious and affordable food, you also get to see the lively riverside and seaside community lifestyle.

Visiting Ha Tien is not just about eating; it’s about experiencing authentic southern Vietnam — from the fish market and night market to traveling on to nearby Phu Quoc Island. I, mr.hotsia, guarantee you will have a fun, tasty, and culturally rich travel experience.
