Sunset at Phu Quoc Island: A true experience from mr.hotsia
When talking about Phu Quoc Island in Kiên Giang province, Vietnam, many might think of clear seas, white sandy beaches, or fresh seafood here. But for me, mr.hotsia, another highlight I want to recommend is watching the sunset in Duong Dong town on the west side of the island. Having experienced it myself, I must say... it is a more impressive and charming moment than I expected.
Duong Dong town is the residential area and the heart of life on Phu Quoc Island. The town is located on the west side of the island. If I were to compare it to a place in Thailand, it would be like Chumphon province about 500 kilometers away. Imagine the sun slowly disappearing at that spot, the orange sun gradually sinking into the sea so slowly that my eyes could almost clearly perceive its movement. It is a rare sight that made me sit quietly and enjoy the moment deeply.
My favorite sunset viewing spot is the market area along the pier parallel to the walking street of Phu Quoc Island. Here, there are tables and chairs to relax, where you can order light drinks and sip while soaking in the sunset atmosphere. I remember sitting there sipping a cold beer, waiting for the moment the sun dipped into the sea. That feeling was simple yet filled with indescribable happiness.
If you want a wider view and a more special peaceful experience, I recommend walking up to the lighthouse located near the beachhead close to the old viewpoint. There, you will see a panoramic sea view, like flying in the sky and looking down at the sun setting on the horizon. It is an unforgettable experience.
Connect with the lifestyle and fresh seafood of Phu Quoc Island
After enjoying the sunset, another activity I never miss is tasting fresh seafood from the seafood street or the island’s night plaza. There are more than 20 seafood restaurants here, focusing on barbecue and hot pot dishes, known locally as 'lao'. I recommend trying the seafood hot pot consisting of squid, shrimp, fish, and glass noodles with fresh vegetables. It’s affordable, costing about 150 baht only. Don’t forget to order grilled eggplant as a side dish to balance the flavors.
The seafood here is so fresh that I could hardly believe it came from a small island in Vietnam. Excitingly, in the afternoon, I saw locals going squid fishing along the beach, catching large squids weighing nearly a kilogram. This is why the seafood here is so fresh and reasonably priced. Besides squid, I also like grilled squid and shark fish, which are hard to find elsewhere.

Traveling and touring around the island with mr.hotsia
For traveling around Phu Quoc Island, I chose to rent a motorcycle because it is convenient and allows me to fully experience the island’s atmosphere. Renting a motorcycle here is quite easy and inexpensive, about 150,000 dong per day (around 150 baht), without complicated documents. I recommend renting from your hotel for convenience and safety. Riding a motorcycle around the island gave me the chance to stop at beautiful beaches, meet locals catching squid, and try freshly fried squid by the sea. It was a very memorable experience.

Context of Kiên Giang province and nearby towns
Phu Quoc Island is part of Kiên Giang province, which has the main city of Rach Gia. I traveled there by boat from Phu Quoc Island. Rach Gia is a lively coastal city full of local culture, especially markets and restaurants focusing on local dishes like crab noodle soup or roasted duck. I tried them and must say they were very delicious.
