Vietnamese food in Kon Tum province with an unforgettable dining experience at mr.hotsia

When talking about Vietnam, many people probably think of the beauty of nature, culture, and one thing I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend not to miss is “Vietnamese food,” especially in the province ofKon Tumwhere I stayed for three full nights. It is a city that still preserves its natural beauty and the simplicity of its people, largely untouched by mass tourism.

For me, eating Vietnamese food in Kon Tum isn’t about memorizing menu names because Vietnamese dish names are really hard to remember. But what I do remember clearly is “Banh Bac Se,” which sounds similar to “Pakse,” a city I passed through in Laos. Adding “Bac” in front made it easy to remember. For other dishes I found in markets or local restaurants, I ordered randomly based on the seller’s recommendations or sometimes just pointed and waited to taste the flavors. I believe the best thing is to open your heart to new experiences rather than sticking to menu names you can’t recall.

Food Ordering Tips in Kon Tum That mr.hotsia Actually Uses

For anyone worried about language when ordering food, I recommend asking for the price first. A simple method I use is saying "bào yíao tián" (which means 'please tell me the price'). They will reply with a number in dong (Vietnamese currency), for example, "mười lăm" means 15,000 dong, about 20+ Thai baht. If I don’t pronounce it clearly, they repeat it until I’m confident, or sometimes they show me the banknote to indicate the price.

Numbers aren’t hard. I suggest memorizing Vietnamese numbers 1-10 like: một (one), hai (two), ba (three), bốn (four), năm (five), sáu (six), bảy (seven), tám (eight), chín (nine), mười (ten). Practice speaking them fluently, and asking prices becomes much easier.

Another trick I practiced until locals were amazed is the phrase “gì này là gì kia” which means “What is this called? What is that called?” said quickly like a Vietnamese person. When they see I can speak, they warmly tell me the dish names and won’t overcharge because they think I’m good at Vietnamese.

The Variety of Food in Kon Tum

In Kon Tum, I tried many dishes. Some I really didn’t know the names of, but some were delicious and some not so much, naturally, when trying unfamiliar local food. The fun was in trying, talking to sellers, and learning about life and culture through the food.

The Kon Tum morning market is another place I highly recommend visiting to explore and taste food. There you’ll find fresh produce, fruits, and ready-to-eat dishes to choose from. The flavors here aren’t as strong as in big tourist cities, making it easy to enjoy and eat continuously without feeling too full too quickly.

Kon Tum: Travel and Feelings While Exploring

Regarding travel to Kon Tum, I have written in the articleTraveling from Pakse, Pak Song to Kon Tum, Vietnamthat it is very easy and convenient. The interprovincial bus stationKon Tumoffers vans and buses to various cities in Vietnam at very affordable prices. For those who like independent travel, I recommend trying it here.

Kon Tum is a peaceful city. People here are not pushy like in big tourist cities I’ve encountered. It’s an atmosphere I really like. I got to talk with locals, learn the language and culture through eating and traveling. It felt like a test before going to bigger cities in Vietnam.
