Kontum Bus Station, a valuable travel connection point in Vietnam
If you are planning a trip in northern or central Vietnam and have heard ofKon Tumpassing by, I, mr.hotsia, would like to share from my personal experience that Kontum Bus Station is one of the stations that impressed me with its convenience and great prices. It truly reflects how well Vietnam manages its domestic transportation system, comparable to anywhere else.
I started by visiting Kon Tum province, a small province in the northern part of central Vietnam. This is not a big tourist city like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, but what made me fall in love was the peaceful town, unhurried and friendly people, and the French architectural charm visible in the old wooden churches around the city. It’s perfect for those who want to experience a slow-paced life and authentic local lifestyle.
For travelers like me who prefer public buses, Kontum Bus Station is a central hub that makes connecting to various cities very convenient, including Gia Lai, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hue, and even Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. The bus fares here are very affordable; for example, a bus to Hanoi costs about 200,000 dong (roughly 300 Thai baht), which is cheap considering the distance and comfort provided.
Ticket Purchase and Travel Convenience
When arriving at Kontum Bus Station, what I liked most was the orderliness and discipline here. The ticket sellers understand that Thai travelers might not be fluent in Vietnamese. I used a simple method: I walked to the counter and said, “Di Hanoi bao nhieu tien?” (meaning “How much to Hanoi?”). The staff then showed me the ticket with the clear price printed on it. No worries about being cheated or confused about the price.
Another thing I liked was the strict management of tuk-tuks and taxis here. They are not allowed to enter the station area directly, which keeps the station atmosphere calm and not chaotic like many places in Thailand. These vehicles wait outside only, helping travelers avoid disturbances and reducing aggressive soliciting or rushing towards tourists, which I have experienced at many stations back home.
Connecting Provinces and Interesting Routes from Kon Tum
Besides the main routes mentioned, Kontum Bus Station also offers buses to surrounding provinces and other important cities such as Quang Nam, about 150 kilometers away. Although the route passes through high mountain roads and takes around 6 hours, the buses depart early in the morning to arrive at a suitable time.
For those traveling onward to Laos, there are buses from Kon Tum to Attapu and Pakse. I once took this route, and it was a memorable and convenient experience for those wanting to explore northern and central Vietnam along with Laos. Accommodation and Markets Near the Bus Station
For accommodation in Kon Tum, I recommend heading to the Kon Tum market area, about 4 kilometers from the bus station. You can take a motorbike taxi for just 30 baht, or for more convenience, call the Minh Linh taxi brand that I regularly use and have never been cheated by. The accommodations near the market come in various levels and are close to interesting restaurants and the morning market.
The Kon Tum morning market is another place I recommend visiting because besides seeing the local lifestyle, there is a variety of food, both authentic Vietnamese and local specialties that are hard to find in big cities.
