Cat Cat Village Sapa: The Charm of the Hmong People and Tien Sa Waterfall in Lào Cai

When talking about Sapa, Lào Cai Province, Vietnam, many people probably think of the uniquely charming Hmong hill tribe village,Cat Cat Villagewhich is one of the oldest tourist destinations here. I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit in January 2013, and I must say that visiting this village is not just about sightseeing but stepping into the real life of the Hmong people in the valley, along with admiring the beauty of Tien Sa Waterfall, which I consider more beautiful than Silver Waterfall that many people ride motorcycles to see.

Starting from Sapa: Walking to Cat Cat

Traveling from Sapa town to Cat Cat Village does not require renting a motorcycle or car because the distance is not far. I chose to walk out from the back of Sapa morning market, which is a convenient starting point and allows you to experience the local town life at the same time. The path takes us past small souvenir shops lined along the way, mostly selling handmade Hmong clothing. For those who love traditional handicrafts, there are plenty to browse and buy.

Along the way, there is a viewpoint at the high market where you can stop to rest and take beautiful nature photos comfortably before continuing to Tien Sa Waterfall, the highlight of this trip. This waterfall is located at the end of Cat Cat Village and is especially beautiful because the water flows over large rocks amidst lush green forest. Unlike Silver Waterfall, which is only tall but lacks the impressive beauty and atmosphere that Tien Sa Waterfall offers.

The Lifestyle of the Hmong People in Cat Cat

Cat Cat Village is a Hmong village that clearly preserves its traditional way of life. Upon entering, you will see wooden houses and a simple hill tribe lifestyle. Most people here still wear their tribe’s beautiful patterned traditional costumes. Walking and chatting with the locals made me feel like I was traveling back in time. The constant sound of the waterfall adds to the atmosphere, making this village walk an unforgettable memory.

I, mr.hotsia, recommend walking back the same way because this route is more convenient and takes less time than the longer outer route. Besides enjoying beautiful views, you can also stop to buy souvenirs or gifts at the small shops along the way.

Travel Tips and Continuing Trips in Sapa

For travelers planning to visit Sapa, I suggest trying the route I used: taking the train from Yen Bai to Lào Cai train station, then a cheap van to Sapa. You can read more details about this travel method in the article.Train from Yen Bai Province to SapaOffers great value and beautiful views along the way.

As for visiting Cat Cat Village, I do not recommend renting a motorcycle to come here directly. If you want to ride a motorcycle for sightseeing, choose other days to enjoy fresh salmon and visit Silver Waterfall, as well as explore other hill tribe villages around Sapa that have similar atmosphere and many options, which I have written about in another article.Eating Raw Salmon in SapaandSapa Trip 2015

Food and Markets in Sapa: Refuel Before the Journey

After exploring Cat Cat Village and Tien Sa Waterfall, before returning to Sapa town, I usually stop to refuel with delicious local food in the affordable food zone under the Sapa morning market. This area gathers hill tribe food stalls with reasonable prices and flavors that suit travelers like me, mr.hotsia. Whether you choose stir-fried tofu or other quick dishes, you will be full and enjoy the authentic community atmosphere. Read more atAffordable Food Zone in Sapa

Additionally, Bac Ha Market, located 36 kilometers from Lào Cai town, is another interesting hill tribe market offering a wide variety of agricultural products and local foods. For those interested in authentic hill tribe lifestyles and wanting to try unusual foods like easy-to-eat sugarcane without peeling, this market is a great choice. I have captured the atmosphere of this market in an article.Bac Ha MarketYou can read more
