Train from Yen Bai to SAPA: A real experience with mr.hotsia
The journey from Yen Bai city, Yen Bai province to Sapa in Lào Cai province is a route I, mr.hotsia, chose to truly experience the local atmosphere and Vietnamese way of life. Taking this train is a unique experience because besides enjoying the lush scenery on both sides, you also get to taste the simplicity of traveling in northern Vietnam on your own.
I started from Yen Bai city, located south of Lào Cai province, taking a morning train to Lào Cai station. The train here is an air-conditioned carriage, clean and comfortable, with snacks like boiled eggs and popcorn sold onboard to keep hunger at bay. Importantly, the train plays an audio introduction about Sapa city in both Vietnamese and English, which made me excited about the destination ahead.
When the train arrived at Lào Cai station in the evening, I had to take a van to Sapa, about 35 kilometers away. What made me frown was the van fare being charged at 200,000 dong, roughly 300 baht, while the normal price should be around 50,000 dong or 75 baht only.
I, mr.hotsia, sincerely recommend that if you don’t want to be overcharged, you should patiently walk to the Lào Cai bus station, which is on the same line as the train station. Walk to the end of that road before taking a van to Sapa to get a much fairer price. Or if you are patient and can negotiate, try saying “năm mươi nghìn” (50,000 dong) to get the proper fare. I still regret being charged too much then, but it was a lesson for travelers like us.
For the return trip from Sapa to Lào Cai train station, I bought a van ticket from my accommodation, and the van picked me up right in front of the place. It was convenient and priced the same as at the bus station, 50,000 dong. This is a good option for those who don’t want to hassle with traveling on their own in Sapa.
Sapa: A dream city for travelers
Sapa is a city I have written about inSapa City 2013I have visited many times. Being close to the Chinese border, the climate is cool all year round, especially in summer when I visited, with temperatures only around 18 degrees Celsius. Sapa is a resort city loved by foreigners and tourists worldwide. The beauty of the terraced rice fields and the diverse hill tribe communities are charms that make me return to Sapa repeatedly.
Traveling from Lào Cai to Sapa is not difficult but requires patience to negotiate van fares and choose the right route. In Sapa itself, there is a cheap food zone for backpackersCheap food zone in Sapalocated under the morning market, where I often stop to taste local dishes like stir-fried tofu and plain rice, as well as strong and smooth Vietnamese coffee. It’s a great energy boost before exploring the town or visiting nearby hill tribe villages.
Travel and local life along the way
The route from Yen Bai to Sapa passes through beautiful landscapes full of mountains and forests. Taking the train allows us to capture every detail of nature and local life. I, mr.hotsia, didn’t rush but gave myself time to absorb the atmosphere and meet people along the way.
At Lào Cai station, there is a bustling market full of locals and tourists. I once stopped by to walk aroundBac Ha Marketwhich is not far from Lào Cai. This market still holds the charm of an authentic hill tribe community, offering fresh produce, fruits, and rare local foods hard to find in big cities, such as spicy grilled pork offal, loved by locals and adventurous tourists.
Tips and advice from mr.hotsia
For travelers wanting to try this train route and go to Sapa, I recommend being patient and confidently prepared to negotiate van fares. Don’t be afraid to walk to the Lào Cai bus station to get a fair price. Also, remember the phrase “năm mươi nghìn” to use when bargaining.
Another important point is buying train tickets back from Lào Cai or Sapa. You should buy from your accommodation or trusted sources because tickets sold at the station are often controlled by brokers and priced higher than normal. I have experienced this problem and recommend planning ahead for peace of mind.
Experience northern Vietnamese lifestyle and food
Besides travel, Sapa and nearby towns are full of delicious food I really like, such as grilled squid with a fragrant charcoal aroma or Vietnamese-style chicken biryani easily found at roadside stalls. You can watch sample clips of these dishes inVietnamese Grilled SquidandVietnamese Chicken Biryaniwhich I have recorded.
This journey from Yen Bai to Sapa made me, mr.hotsia, love the charm of northern Vietnam even more. Sapa is not just a beautiful tourist city but also hides the simplicity and warmth of hill tribe life blended perfectly with local culture. If you are looking for an adventure that truly experiences real life and beautiful natural views, taking the train from Yen Bai to Sapa is an answer you should not miss.
