Sapa, the cool town in Lào Cai you must experience yourself
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I will take you to visit Sapa, a famous tourist city in Lào Cai province, Vietnam, located not far from the Chinese border. I have traveled to Sapa many times and am always impressed by its cool atmosphere all year round. Even in the last summer I visited, the temperature was only about 18 degrees Celsius. This makes Sapa perfect for escaping the heat from our tropical hometown.
Sapa is an old town that the French used as a resort during the colonial era. It has a beautiful European-style atmosphere. The town is clean and features unique buildings unlike any other city in Vietnam. Sometimes when I stroll around Sapa, I feel more like I am in Europe than Vietnam.
The Charm of Sapa with Terraced Rice Fields and Diverse Hill Tribes
What makes Sapa famous worldwide is the terraced rice fields stretching along the hillsides in various valleys. I had the chance to ride a motorcycle to visit many villages. Around Sapa town, there are many hill tribes such as the Hmong, Tai, and even Thai people who migrated from the same origins as us. This creates a culturally diverse atmosphere in the town and surrounding villages.
I recommend visiting Ban Ha village, a Tai village about 20 kilometers from Sapa. The trip is convenient, and you can ask for maps from accommodations likeSON HA Hotelwhere I stayed. The accommodation is clean, the owner is friendly and ready to give good advice including travel maps. Renting a motorcycle here costs about 120 baht per day, which is a great option for independent travelers. However, be careful about insurance for accidents because there is none here. You must drive very cautiously.
Markets and Local Food in Sapa
Sapa has very interesting hill tribe markets such as the Sapa market in town and Bac Ha market, about 36 kilometers from Lào Cai city. Bac Ha market is where various hill tribes come to trade local goods including fresh food, vegetables, fruits, and various items. The market atmosphere is lively and colorful. I once walked around this market and felt like stepping back in time to see the authentic hill tribe lifestyle. There are Hmong, Tai, and other tribes wearing bright traditional costumes, happily selling their goods.
Sapa's food is second to none. The cheap food zone I often visit is near the morning market, where there are many local dishes such as stir-fried tofu, Vietnamese chicken biryani, and grilled dishes like the button squid which I tried and loved (if interested, check out the videos I recorded).Vietnamese Grilled Button SquidandVietnamese Chicken Biryani)
How to Travel and Pro Tips for Visiting Sapa
There are many ways to travel to Sapa. I once traveled from Chiang Khong, crossed to Huay Sai, took a bus to Udomxay city, stayed one night, then continued by bus to Khoa city, then to Dien Bien Phu, another great city with a Thai Dam community. From there, I took a direct bus to Sapa. The bus leaves early morning and arrives in Sapa in the afternoon (read more atTraveling from Dien Bien Phu to Sapa)
Another option is to take a sleeper train from Hanoi to Lào Cai station, then a minibus to Sapa. The minibus fare from Lào Cai train station to Sapa is about 50,000 VND (75 baht). I recommend walking to the Lào Cai bus station on the same road as the train station to negotiate a fairer price (read more atTrain from Yen Bai to SAPA)
There are also tours from Hanoi that include accommodation, train, and hill tribe guides, which is very convenient for those who don't want to plan themselves. But if you want to travel independently, I recommend renting a motorcycle to better experience the atmosphere and beautiful views.
Additional Tips for Traveling to Sapa
When visiting Sapa, I recommend avoiding winter because it can be very cold, which might make the trip less enjoyable. The terraced rice fields, a highlight here, are also less beautiful than in summer. I still want to return to experience the winter cold to see how cold it really is. But if you want to see beautiful views and enjoy cool, comfortable weather without it being too hot, summer months like April are quite suitable.
Sapa town is lively both day and night. The hill tribe market in Sapa town is on Saturdays, and Bac Ha market is on Sundays. If you go on other days, there are still markets but fewer people. Bac Ha market is about 70 kilometers from Sapa towards Lào Cai, with about 35 kilometers from Sapa to Lào Cai and another 35 kilometers from Lào Cai to Bac Ha.
Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia
Sapa is a city that impressed me with its natural beauty, diverse hill tribe lifestyles, as well as local culture and delicious food. The travel options are quite convenient with many routes to choose from according to your preference, whether by tour or independent travel.
For anyone wanting to experience a cool town not far from Thailand, Sapa is the answer that mr.hotsia wants you to visit at least once. I guarantee you will have wonderful memories and unique experiences.
