Experience the lifestyle and ethnic minority performances in Đà Nẵng, Vietnam
When talking about traveling in Vietnam, many might think of big cities like Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, or tourist destinations like Hội An. But for me, mr.hotsia, experiencing the culture of ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands area such as Đà Nẵng is an unmissable experience.
During the daytime on my tour, I had the chance to visit a hill tribe village with a longhouse, known locally as a Long house, a type of house I had seen before in Đắk Zưng, Sekong Province, Laos. That house was home to about 100 people, reflecting the lifestyle and community spirit of the ethnic minorities in this region.
The Central Highlands of Vietnam and Laos have been influenced by ethnic minorities who lived there long ago, especially in the naming of villages or provinces containing the word "Đắk," which means water. This reflects the wisdom and connection of local people with their natural surroundings, such as Đắk Zưng in Laos and Đắk Lắk in Vietnam. Although such longhouses are now rare in Đà Nẵng itself, I plan to return to Đắk Zưng to truly experience the lifestyle of the ethnic minorities there.
A Night of Fun with Ethnic Minority Performances
Since I hadn’t deeply experienced the ethnic minority lifestyle during the day in Đà Nẵng, I decided to buy a tour ticket to watch an ethnic minority performance at night. The tour was reasonably priced at about 300-400 baht. The show was held about 10 kilometers from downtown Đà Nẵng, starting around 7:30 PM and ending around 9:30 PM.
The atmosphere was lively with local Vietnamese people; there were no foreign tourists. I noticed they had traditional liquor offerings and grilled food available for order at the event. The performance took place around a large bonfire, with villagers playing traditional instruments to accompany dancing and singing in a joyful rhythm.
What impressed me most was the participation of both tourists and locals, especially Vietnamese people from various provinces who were invited to join games and dance around the fire without hesitation. Men and women were close, carrying each other, riding on shoulders, or even cheek-kissing in a friendly manner, even if they didn’t know each other before. It was a scene of fun and warmth in the ethnic minority community that I had never seen anywhere else.
However, the lighting was quite dim, making my photos and videos a bit dark, but the atmosphere and feelings at that moment remain deeply memorable to me.
Đà Nẵng: A City Blending Ethnic Minority Culture and Modernity
After watching the ethnic minority performance, I had time to stroll around downtown Đà Nẵng, a city that interestingly blends modernity with local culture.Đà NẵngIt is a city with beautiful seaside resorts and many hotels serving both Vietnamese and international tourists.
For those who want to relax by the sea, I recommend hotels located on the beach of Đà Nẵng Bay, which offer beautiful sea views and reasonably priced rooms. If you prefer a lively city atmosphere, you can stay in the city center to easily explore the lifestyle of Đà Nẵng’s people.Recommended Seaside Hotels with Beautiful Views in Đà NẵngWhere I Have Stayed
Connecting Experiences with Traveling in Đà Lạt
Speaking of highland cities in Vietnam, Đà Lạt (Lâm Đồng) is another city I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting next. It is a resort city with cool weather year-round and attractions such as a clean bus station with connections to major cities.Đà Lạt Bus StationIncluding a train station with historic architecture and a scenic railway route.Đà Lạt Train Station
Additionally, Đà Lạt is famous for local food like “Bún Riêu,” which I tried and really enjoyed. It is a soup made from fish roe mixed with duck or chicken eggs, served with fresh vegetables. The flavor is rich and warming, perfect for the cool climate of this city.Bún Riêu, Đà Lạt’s Signature Dish
