Viet Tri local cuisine at Viet Tri morning market
When it comes to experiencing the local lifestyle in Viet Tri city, Phú Thọ province, the first thing I, mr.hotsia, must recommend is waking up early to visit the morning market.Viet Tri morning marketThis place is like the heart of the community, gathering fresh food, fruits, and local snacks in a lively yet simple atmosphere true to the local people.
I started my day by walking into the open-air section of the morning market where locals eagerly sell fresh vegetables and fruits from their gardens. Even though it drizzled on the day I visited, it didn’t diminish the vibrant atmosphere. The aroma of food prepared for the morning filled the air. Some stalls sold Phở, which here is flavorful and balanced without needing extra seasoning. I enjoyed a hot bowl of Phở followed by soft-boiled eggs served with simple but delicious side dishes that deserved a thumbs up.
After a satisfying meal, I sat down to sip coffee by the roadside, another culture I really enjoy in Vietnam. The Vietnamese coffee here is strong and fragrant, different from other places. I tried several shops both near the market and by the lake. That area has two old coffee shops side by side. I sampled both and must say the taste exceeded my expectations. Sitting there sipping coffee while watching local life was so enjoyable I lost track of time.
If you want to experience the variety of food in Viet Tri, I, mr.hotsia, recommend exploring the Lotte mall located in the city center in front of the market. Besides authentic Vietnamese restaurants, there is a Vietnamese-style fried chicken shop with a unique rich flavor. There is also a Korean BBQ buffet restaurant and interestingly, Thai food options as well. It’s perfect for those who want to try many dishes in one place.
Lakeside local market and must-try crispy roast duck and pork
Another day, I took a taxi around the roads surrounding Viet Tri lake. This area remains more natural and peaceful than the city center. I found a small local market behind the two coffee shops I mentioned earlier, known among local travelers.
This market has only a few locals selling goods but the atmosphere is simple and warm. I saw unusual items like cowhide woven into elephant trunks, a fascinating local craft. In this area, there are also shops selling roast duck and crispy pork that I must say is the best roast duck I’ve ever had. The duck here is stuffed with Chinese starfruit leaves, giving it a fragrant aroma and balanced flavor with spices not easily found elsewhere. I bought one whole duck to enjoy myself.
The atmosphere at this lakeside local market reminded me of the simplicity and sincerity of the people in Viet Tri who have preserved their traditional lifestyle well. Although the city has grown with large shopping malls and international restaurants, the morning market and local markets remain the heart of the community.
Viet Tri city: A balance of development and local lifestyle
For those interested in the story of Viet Tri city, Phú Thọ province, I have written about it in an article.Viet Tri city, Phú Thọ provinceIt is the main city of the northeastern province of Vietnam with a population of over 260,000 and is an important economic center of the area. Although I had heard the province has a low per capita income, when I explored it myself, I found clear signs of growth and modernity including roads, shopping malls, and diverse international restaurants.
What impressed me most is that this city has preserved its local character well, especially in terms of food at the morning and local markets I mentioned, as well as the roadside coffee culture that everyone visiting should experience.
