Caves of Halong Bay: An immersive real-field experience by mr.hotsia
When talking about Halong Bay in Quảng Ninh Province, Vietnam, one of the landmarks every tour must visit is “Hang Sung Sot Cave,” commonly called “Halong Bay Cave” by many tourists. It is part of a famous UNESCO World Heritage site and extremely popular. I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to explore it myself and want to share a unique firsthand experience.
Hang Sung Sot Cave is located on a limestone cliff by the sea, not very steep. The entrance is very convenient and safe because the pathways inside are well arranged with lighting and colorful effects that add a magical atmosphere. The cave’s air is cool and comfortable, not stuffy as one might expect. A leisurely walk through the cave takes about 30 minutes, enough to appreciate the stunning details and complex stalactite and stalagmite formations.
What I liked most is that the cave doesn’t feel overcrowded or chaotic, even though it’s a main destination for many tours. Most tour boats drop visitors at the cave entrance and pick them up at the exit. Near the exit, local vendors sell fresh seafood lined up, including shrimp, shellfish, crabs, and fish freshly caught from the sea. This adds a charm that lets you feel the local lifestyle more deeply.
The surroundings of Halong Bay are filled with hundreds and thousands of small islands, making photos look like perfectly composed paintings. I once stayed on Cat Ba Island, the largest island in the area, to fully experience the community and nature. You can read more about my experience atCat Ba Islandwhich was a perfect base to complete the Halong trip.
Halong Bay is popular among both foreigners and Vietnamese, especially during holidays or festivals. I have seen the lively night market atmosphere in Halong, with seafood restaurants packed and Thai language signs attracting Thai tourists, such as Thai-style seafood dipping sauces. Though the taste differs from home, it’s quite interesting. Seafood lovers should not miss reading my articleHalong Seafoodthat I wrote before.
For traveling to Halong Bay, I mostly recommend buying 1-day or 2-day 1-night tours from Hanoi, which include sightseeing around the bay, snorkeling, kayaking, and cave visits. These tours vary in price depending on the boat and meals provided. I have tried a one-day tour starting in the morning and returning in the evening, which was very worthwhile for those with limited time. (Read more atHalong Bay Tours)
Back to Hang Sung Sot Cave, besides being a prominent viewpoint and cave attraction, it also connects closely with the local fishermen’s and vendors’ lifestyles. At the cave exit, you will see small boats lined up and a small market selling fresh seafood. I saw giant squids and live shrimp still moving in cages at the nearby fresh market. This lively atmosphere is rare in tourist spots focused only on beauty.
If you want to experience a deeper and livelier side of Halong Bay, I, mr.hotsia, recommend exploring Cat Ba Market, also known as Ket Ba Market, full of fresh seafood and the bustling sounds of locals trading. Details can be found atCat Ba Market (Ket Ba Market)which is another side of Halong Bay that impressed me equally.
Finally, visiting the caves of Halong Bay is not just a simple cave tour but an experience of nature and local culture combined. If you want a true panoramic view of Halong Bay, a scenic flight would be an unmissable experience. Although there are currently no sightseeing flights available, if you have the chance, find a suitable tour or stay on Cat Ba Island to explore fully. I believe you will fall in love with Halong Bay just as I, mr.hotsia, do.
