Vinh Yên and Vinh Phuc Food by mr.hotsia
On my trip to Vinh Phuc province in northern Vietnam, besides experiencing the atmosphere of a city not far from Hanoi, what impressed me most was the food culture of the people in Vinh Yên, the provincial capital. It has a unique charm that differs somewhat from southern Vietnam or even Hanoi.
I arrived in Vinh Yên early in the morning and explored the market.Vinh Yên MarketLocated in the heart of the old town, this open-air market without a roof reminded me of Hanoi's morning markets but felt quieter and more local. Locals sell fresh goods ranging from pork, fish, shrimp to fresh vegetables laid out on the ground in a friendly manner. The market also has dog meat vendors, a sight not often seen in typical Vietnamese markets, and fresh fish sellers preparing their products right there.
One thing I really liked was the market atmosphere with mobile bicycle carts selling fresh goods moving around. This charm made me feel like I was truly strolling through a local market, not a commercial tourist spot. Seeing locals buying and chatting happily, tasting local food in such an atmosphere is very different from eating in restaurants.
Regarding local dishes in Vinh Yên, I noticed most foods have flavors and culture close to Hanoi because Vinh Phuc borders Hanoi directly and is near Noi Bai International Airport. A standout dish I tried was “Bánh mì,” the Vietnamese-style French bread, but here it’s made differently from southern Vietnam by adding grilled pork cut into strips instead of fried eggs or soft-boiled eggs as I’ve seen in Ho Chi Minh City.
In downtown Vinh Yên, several bánh mì shops open early. Although I didn’t find many pho noodles or rice porridge stalls in the morning, the bánh mì and Vietnamese chicken biryani I tasted were flavorful and rich. There were also local vendors sitting and eating boiled shellfish at night in a friendly setting, with young people and workers sipping Vietnamese white liquor and peeling shellfish one by one, creating a warm community atmosphere.
If you go up to Tam Đảo town located on the mountain peak in Vinh Phuc province, prepare for cold weather. There, hot pot or Vietnamese sukiyaki is popular, with many restaurants offering delicious flavors. I remember sitting and enjoying hot liquor in the chilly mountain atmosphere, a perfect feeling that refreshed both body and mind.
For travelers convenient to travel by car, I recommend stopping byBig C Vinh Yênwhich is about 7 kilometers from the city center. Here you will find a full range of food and fresh products, suitable for those wanting to buy souvenirs or food to take home. There are also metered taxis ready to serve between the city and the mall, making travel more comfortable.
If you are interested in accommodation in Vinh Yên not far from the market and city, I have stayed at Trung Du hotel located opposite Big C. It is a good and convenient choice for sightseeing and tasting local food. For more information about accommodation in Vinh Phuc, you can checkHotels in Vinh Phucon my site.
Besides food, Vinh Yên also has interesting local culture such as the red-whiskered bulbul bird contest which I had the chance to watch at the city stadium. It is a popular activity among locals and adds vibrant color to the food and lifestyle of Vinh Yên people. You can read more about the red-whiskered bulbul and local culture atVietnamese Red-Whiskered Bulbulwhich I have documented in detail.
Before we part, I’d like to share some Vietnamese food clips I recorded during this trip, such as the well-marinated and flavorful grilled button squid and the fragrant Vietnamese chicken biryani, reflecting Vinh Phuc’s diverse and interesting food culture.
For friends wanting to experience the real food and atmosphere of Vinh Yên, Vinh Phuc province, I think you should not miss this opportunity. Traveling here is straightforward, and if you enjoy fresh local food, a rustic market atmosphere, and dishes similar to Hanoi but with unique characteristics, Vinh Yên will surely be a destination you will cherish.
