Vinh Yen Market, the capital city of Vinh Phuc Province, Vietnam

When talking about visiting Vinh Phuc Province, located in the Red River Delta and not far from Hanoi, one place I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting isVinh Yen Market(Vinh Yen Market), an open-air market located in the heart of Vinh Yen city, the capital of this province.

I arrived in Vinh Yen in the morning by taking a metered taxi from Big C, which is about 7 kilometers from the city center (I wrote about this in the articleBig C in Vietnam). The fare was about 70 Thai Baht, which is very reasonable considering the convenience of traveling into the city and experiencing a truly fresh market.

Vinh Yen Market is an open-air market without a roof, selling fresh produce and a variety of fruits and vegetables. Especially fresh meat like pork, chicken, and duck, which are sold from mid-morning rather than very early like typical morning markets. I arrived around 8:00 AM, when the atmosphere was just right, slightly cool due to the winter season, giving a traditional market vibe that is not rushed like markets in big cities.

What I liked most about this market was the variety of seafood, especially the abundance of fish sold. There are many fish vendors, and I also saw two dog meat stalls, which was unusual and reflects the local lifestyle that is still well preserved.

While walking around the market, I saw several small bicycles with mobile stalls selling vegetables and pork. These carts enter small alleys right to customers’ doorsteps for fresh shopping, and if it’s fish, they offer on-the-spot fish cutting services. This charm is rare to find in typical markets. This atmosphere reminded me of a simple lifestyle that blends convenience and community perfectly.

After exploring the market twice and taking photos and videos, I continued to stroll around Vinh Yen city to experience the local lifestyle, including food and various activities beyond just shopping at the fresh market. During that time, I came across a red-whiskered bulbul bird contest at the Vinh Yen stadium, which is not far from the market. I have written about this bird contest in the articleVietnamese Red-whiskered BulbulThis bird is very popular in northern Vietnam. Its melodious song and the bird contests are activities that attract serious interest from local villagers.

If anyone is interested in staying in this city, I recommend reading the articleHotels in Vinh Phucthat I wrote. Accommodations in Vinh Yen range from small hotels in the city center to hotels near Big C, which are suitable for those arriving late or who prefer the convenience of being close to a shopping mall.

For travelers who enjoy experiencing an unembellished fresh market, Vinh Yen Market is a must-visit experience. Walking around choosing fresh ingredients, observing local life, chatting with vendors, or even watching the red-whiskered bulbul bird contest offers a genuine and deeper travel experience than visiting big cities.

Additionally, if you like trying local food, Vinh Yen Market is a place where you can taste fresh dishes and closely observe traditional food preparation methods of Vinh Yen, which I have documented in the articleFood of Vinh Yen People, Vinh PhucAlso, if you want to relax after walking the market, I recommend trying Vietnamese massage here. The massage style I experienced was unique and interesting. You can read more atVietnamese Massage.

Finally, for those interested in fully experiencing the atmosphere of Vinh Yen fresh market, I recommend watching the video clips I recorded, including local food clips such as Vietnamese Grilled Button Squid and Vietnamese Chicken Biryani, which greatly enrich the travel experience.

Try planning a trip to Vinh Yen once, and you will see that the capital of Vinh Phuc Province is not just an ordinary small city but a center of northern Vietnamese lifestyle and culture impressively presented in the style of mr.hotsia.
