Halong is an important tourist city in Vietnam, located in Quang Ninh province. The capital city is Halong.

Halong Bay is a World Heritage tourist site. Most visitors here come from Hanoi. Halong has Halong Bay as a World Heritage site with many beautiful limestone islands. Most tourists rent boats for tours or stay on Cat Ba Island. Cat Ba is the largest island in Halong Bay, covering nearly 200 square kilometers. The other islands in Halong are mostly small and less interesting, which makes photos of the small islands look very beautiful.

To see the most beautiful Halong Bay, you probably need to take a plane to see all the small islands, but I have not seen any plane tours over Halong Bay yet. Most visitors buy tours from Hanoi, either day trips returning in the evening or two-day one-night tours. Prices vary depending on the boat and meals provided. When buying tours, check carefully about accommodation and food.

Buying tours is the most popular choice for visitors to Halong to fully experience and find the best value. I chose to stay on Cat Ba Island by taking a bus from Hanoi bus station to Halong, stayed one night in Halong, then took a taxi to the ferry pier to continue by ferry to Cat Ba. After the ferry, I took a local bus to Cat Ba town.

I traveled to Cat Ba Island during a long holiday, Vietnam's National Day. All costs for bus, ferry, and accommodation increased because many Vietnamese tourists also came. For example, bus fares rose from 15 baht to 120 baht. Accommodation on Cat Ba on non-holidays costs about 10 USD, but on holidays about 30 USD. Therefore, if you plan to visit and stay on Cat Ba Island, buy combined bus + ferry + bus tickets available at box sale offices.

Buying tickets in Hanoi city like this is more cost-effective and saves money. The buses connect in stages until reaching Cat Ba Island. Departing Hanoi in the morning, you arrive at Cat Ba by afternoon. Accommodation on Cat Ba is mostly along the beach because the island has only a small flat area in front; the rest is high limestone hills. Prices are about 10-15 USD per night. You can walk around to find accommodation; there is no shortage.

Even on the busiest day, Vietnam's National Day, there was enough accommodation. Most restaurants on Cat Ba serve seafood for dinner, which is very fresh and delicious, especially shellfish, but prices are higher than in Thailand. For breakfast and lunch, several Vietnamese street vendors along the beach sell food at reasonable prices, not as cheap as in Hue or Hoi An. See Mr.Hotsia's seafood restaurant recommendations. Recommended activities on Cat Ba Island include:

Buying tours to Halong Bay, eating delicious seafood, strolling the Cat Ba fresh market, waking early for Vietnamese coffee, and enjoying walks are all enjoyable. Cat Ba's bay in front of the beach is a beautiful semicircle. Just looking out the hotel window to see the beautiful view and feel the cool breeze from Halong is a great atmosphere. For nightlife, Vietnamese people like to ride small three-wheeled bikes along the beach road, walking back and forth, which adds vibrant colors to the beach area at Cat Ba.

There are many massage shops along the beach. You can request the type of massage you want. Some massages may include additional services; if you want a regular massage, be sure to clearly inform them to avoid any problems. Mr.Hotsia May 2011
