Each province area in Vietnam is about the same size as Thailand. Thua Thien - Hue province has the city of Hue well known to Thai people because tours frequently visit Hue. Hue is only 9 hours from Savan - Mukdahan, a morning to evening trip, not far at all. Hue has a World Heritage site, the old Nguyen Dynasty Imperial Palace. Hue offers cheap accommodation and food, making it a popular destination. Tourist attractions in Hue

The top attraction is the old Imperial Palace of Hue, followed by the old Khe Sanh battlefield, then the Emperor tombs. Shopping spots popular with Thai tourists where vendors even speak Thai. I separate each topic because there is a lot of interesting travel info. For Mr.Hotsia, I enjoy walking to see the Perfume River and the Perfume River Bridge at night. The lights here are beautifully colorful and alternating.

Young couples in Hue come to enjoy the romantic river view. In Vietnam, young people sweetly date in public parks. Hue has major shopping malls like Big C, similar to the Big C in Thailand. I haven’t checked prices there yet but have explored markets near Dong Ba. I also checked food prices at supermarkets in Hue to avoid overpaying, which I recommend doing whenever traveling to a new city.

Besides knowing prices, you learn how locals live and what they eat. When I walked around, I saw Vietnamese people seriously lining up to buy fresh French baguettes, so I joined the queue. They bake them fresh here. (Read about Hue cuisine) Traveling solo in Hue is simple and not difficult. The only possible issue is persistent offers from motorbike taxis, vendors, or hotel brokers.

If you don’t want their service, just say "khong" which means "no" and walk away. Don’t engage in long talks as they will persist more. If they follow you too much, call the police. They won’t harm you, just annoy you. Also, whether traveling with a tour or alone, expect to sometimes pay higher prices, which is normal. Even Mr.Hotsia experiences this, so don’t worry about it.

Consider it normal to be overcharged sometimes; don’t let it spoil your trip. The easiest way to travel to Hue is via Mukdahan province, crossing into Savan then taking an international bus from Savan to Hue, Vietnam. Buses run daily and cross the Lao Bao checkpoint. I wrote a separate article about traveling to Hue via Lao Bao checkpoint. Accommodation in Hue is affordable with many options.

No need to book in advance; prices are about 300 baht per night (data from January 2011). Rooms have air conditioning and hot water; similar rooms in Thailand cost about 600 baht. Guesthouse prices in Hue are about half of Thailand’s. Read about hotels, accommodations, and guesthouses recommended by mr.hotsia here. Regarding food, don’t worry; it’s very cheap. Single-dish meals cost about 15,000 dong or 30 baht, while in Laos it’s 15,000 kip or 60 baht.

Food prices in Vietnam are similar or slightly cheaper than Thailand. My style of travel in Hue is joining day tours to various places, joining foreigners for affordable trips. Or you can rent a motorbike for 150 baht per day, or 300 baht with a driver. Bicycle rentals are 30 baht per day. Besides tours, I enjoy walking along the river, malls, and markets, casually exploring.

When traveling in Hue without a tour, be cautious not to walk alone at night in isolated parks. This is common sense everywhere in the world. Always go where there are many people. Avoid lonely places including near the old city walls of the Hue Imperial Palace at night. Mr.hotsia January 2011 guides you through Hue Imperial Palace, night clips of Perfume River Bridge, Khe Sanh battlefield tour, and the Vinh Moc tunnels.
