Vietnam, Hue City

Travel information, tourist attractions, Hue City, Vietnam, hotels in Hue City, Vietnam, accommodations in Hue City. Hue is the capital city of Thua Thien - Hue province. Vietnam has a total of 59 provinces. It has less area than Thailand but has tens of millions more people. Each province in Vietnam is about the same size as those in Thailand. Thua Thien - Hue province is well known to Thai people because of Hue City.
There are regular tours to Hue City. Hue is only 9 hours away from Savannakhet - Mukdahan. Traveling there in a day is not far at all. Hue has a World Heritage site, the old Nguyen dynasty royal palace. Hue offers affordable accommodations and cheap food, making it a popular destination. The top attraction in Hue is the old royal palace, followed by the old Khe Sanh battlefield, and then the emperor's tombs.
Hue is a popular shopping spot among Thai tourists, so much so that market vendors can speak Thai. I have separated each topic because there is a lot of interesting travel information. For Mr. Hotsia, I enjoy walking along the Perfume River and the Perfume River bridge at night. The lights are beautifully lit with changing colors. Young couples in Hue come to enjoy the romantic view. In Vietnam, young people often sweetly spend time together in public parks. Hue also has leading shopping malls like Big C.
Big C is just like the one in Thailand. I haven't checked prices there yet but have walked around the Dong Ba market area. I checked food prices at supermarkets in Hue to avoid being overcharged when shopping here. I recommend doing this every time you visit a new city. Besides knowing prices, you also learn about how locals live and what they eat. When I was there, I saw Vietnamese people seriously queuing to buy freshly baked French baguettes. I joined the queue with them. (Read about Hue cuisine)
Traveling independently in Hue is not complicated and not hard to get to. One possible issue is when hired motorbike drivers, persistent sellers, or hotel agents try to sell services you don't want. Just say "Kong," which means "No," and walk away. Don't argue because the more you talk, the more persistent they become. If they follow you too much, call the police.
These people won't harm you; they just annoy you. Another thing is that whether you come with a tour company or independently, you might sometimes be overcharged, which is normal and happens to everyone. Even Mr. Hotsia has experienced it. Don't worry about it; just accept it as normal. Don't let it spoil your trip. The most convenient way to travel to Hue is through Mukdahan province, crossing to Savannakhet, then taking an international bus from Savannakhet to Hue, Vietnam. Buses run daily and pass through the Lao Bao checkpoint. I have written about this in another article titled "Traveling to Hue via Lao Bao checkpoint."
Accommodations in Hue are affordable with many options and no need for advance booking. Prices are around 300 baht per night (information as of January 2011). These rooms have air conditioning and hot water. Such rooms cost about 600 baht in Thailand. Guesthouse prices in Hue are about half the price of those in Thailand. size="5" Read about hotels and guesthouses recommended by Mr. Hotsia here.
Regarding food, don't worry when visiting Hue. Food is very cheap. Single dishes cost about 15,000 dong or 30 baht, while in Laos it's 15,000 kip or 60 baht. Food prices in Vietnam are comparable to or slightly cheaper than in Thailand. Read about food in Hue. My style of traveling in Hue is to join day tours to various places, joining foreigners at affordable prices. Or if you want to rent a motorbike to explore on your own, it costs 150 baht per day. If you want a driver, it's 300 baht. Bicycle rentals are 30 baht per day. Besides tours, I also enjoy walking along the riverbank, malls, and markets, casually exploring.
When traveling in Hue without a tour, be cautious not to walk alone at night in deserted parks. Actually, this is good advice anywhere in Thailand or the world. Always visit places with many people. Avoid isolated areas, including the old royal palace walls at night. Mr. Hotsia, January 2011.
