Backpacking Southern Cambodia 35/41: Eating Without Talking - Phnom Penh Grilled Pork Rice, Similar to Vietnamese Com Tam, Ordered Extra Pork, Listening to Khmer Music

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to stroll around Phnom Penh once again, the capital of Cambodia where the Mekong River and Tonle Sap River flow through. It’s a city that, despite many visits, still holds an undiminished charm. This time, I intended to head straight to a local-style southern Khmer grilled pork rice restaurant, which stands out for its taste and atmosphere worth sharing.

When it comes to grilled pork rice in Phnom Penh, this dish carries a scent similar to Vietnamese “Com Tam” that I have tried many times. The pork is grilled to crispy skin and tender juicy meat, served with hot steamed rice and fresh vegetables that feel very refreshing. This time, I didn’t talk at all while eating, just focused on the harmonious flavors. The grilled pork was perfectly sweet and salty, making me order an extra plate of pork because I finished the first one before I realized it.

The atmosphere in the restaurant is genuinely Khmer friendly. Traditional Khmer music plays softly in the background, creating a warm and lively ambiance. I like that it’s not just about eating to be full but also about experiencing Khmer culture through music and the lifestyle of locals sitting and eating beside me.

Travel and Atmosphere in Phnom Penh

Many who have visitedPhnom Penhknow well that this place has many charms, including the beautiful Royal Palace, the Killing Fields full of painful history, and bustling fresh markets as lively as anywhere else. On this trip, I also stopped by Phnom Penh Bus Station to check out Cambodia’s transportation system, which, although simple, offers a certain level of convenience.Phnom Penh Bus StationThere are air-conditioned buses serving many routes, including to provinces like Takeo, where I have traveled before with Soraya Tours.Bus from Phnom Penh to Takeo Provincetakes about two and a half hours, which is not too far for traveling to southern Cambodia.

If you are a backpacker like me, mr.hotsia, I recommend booking tickets through hotel agencies for convenience and to avoid language barriers. Khmer language might be difficult for those unfamiliar, but this system helps solve many problems. Importantly, the prices are also quite reasonable.

Eating Phnom Penh Grilled Pork Rice: An Extraordinary Flavor

Back to food, the Phnom Penh grilled pork rice I found this time is notable for its fragrant Khmer spices mixed with the scent of charcoal grilled at a moderate heat—not too strong nor undercooked. The pork has a sweet and salty taste combined with a slightly sour dipping sauce, making it not greasy at all. It’s like eating Vietnamese Com Tam I used to love but with a full Khmer identity.

I ordered an extra plate of pork because it was truly irresistible. This is the charm of street food in Phnom Penh—not only affordable but also full of flavors made with heart, making me stop to eat several times before continuing my journey.

Khmer Music and Street Atmosphere

While I was eating grilled pork rice, traditional Khmer music softly played from a small player that the shop owner turned on quietly. This music is not just background noise but an essential part that makes the restaurant’s atmosphere warm and memorable. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy seeing locals sitting, listening to music, and chatting simply. Sometimes, these small laughs and conversations make my travels meaningful.

In Phnom Penh, although it is a big city, the simplicity and friendliness of the people remain abundant. I recommend taking a walk along the Mekong River or visiting the lively fresh marketPhnom Penh Fresh Marketto deeply experience the culture and lifestyle before ending with a delicious grilled pork meal like this.

Summary of Experience and Recommendations

For anyone planning to visit Phnom Penh, don’t forget to set aside some time to explore the southern part of the city because you will find delicious street food like Phnom Penh grilled pork rice, which feels like eating Vietnamese Com Tam but with authentic Khmer charm. Also, don’t miss listening to Khmer music that completes the atmosphere.

Additionally, traveling within Phnom Penh and to provinces like Takeo or even Udong, which is nearby, is much more convenient with reliable bus services and agencies.Udong City, Udong, Phnom Penhis another destination I want to revisit when I get the chance.

For those who want a travel experience like mr.hotsia, I recommend using Soraya Tours buses that I have used before. Sitting on the left side of the bus, you can enjoy the Cambodian countryside views along the way, guaranteed to see the real life of southern Khmer people that is impressively unique.
