Bus from Phnom Penh to Takeo Province with the real travel experience of mr.hotsia
Hello to readers following mr.hotsia's work. Today I will share my experience traveling by bus from Phnom Penh to Takeo Province in Cambodia. This route is one I highly recommend for those interested in exploring rural areas and the local lifestyle of Cambodia beyond the well-known Siem Reap or Sihanoukville familiar to Thai travelers.
Starting atPhnom Penh Bus StationThe bus from Sorya Tour company was my main choice for this trip because the company is known for punctuality and a comprehensive travel network. There are 4 departures daily at 7:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 4:30 PM. I chose the 1:30 PM departure to have time to explore the market and atmosphere in Phnom Penh city before leaving.
The bus is air-conditioned, but honestly, the air conditioning was not as cold as expected. It was somewhat hot and stuffy but still bearable compared to local buses without air conditioning. The route passes through Kandal Province and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Along the way, you can see simple rural landscapes, traditional houses, and the lifestyle of Khmer people still using ox carts on the roads, as I previously described in my articleTraveling from Siem Reap to Phnom Penhwhich has a similar atmosphere but different distance and travel time.
When the bus arrives at Takeo Province, it stops in front of Takeo Market, a small but lively fresh market in the morning and evening. This spot is one of my favorites because it offers a close experience of local daily life. The market is full of fresh goods including vegetables, fruits, fish, and meats, with vendors loudly calling out, similar to the fresh markets in Phnom Penh that I have explored in detail.Phnom Penh Fresh Market 2013indeed.
In front of this market, there is a queue for Sorya Tour buses waiting to pick up passengers for onward travel or return to Phnom Penh. The return buses run only twice daily at 7:00 AM and 1:30 PM. I chose the afternoon bus to fully enjoy breakfast and lunch before heading back. The food in Takeo tastes very similar to typical Khmer cuisine I have experienced before.Khmer Foodis easy to find here, affordable, and mostly made with fresh ingredients. It is another experience travelers should not miss.
For tourists interested in visiting Takeo Province, I recommend planning to continue to Kampot Province nearby, which offers beautiful attractions and beaches. You can take a bus or hire a taxi. However, hiring a taxi directly from Phnom Penh to Takeo is not very cost-effective due to the long distance and high price.
Throughout the journey from Phnom Penh to Takeo, you will clearly see the contrast between urban and rural lifestyles. While passing through Kandal Province, the charm of Cambodian countryside is evident everywhere, with rows of sugar palm trees along the fields, old wooden houses, and ox carts still in use, which reminded me ofUdong Citywhich I passed by on a previous trip. Although I did not get off to explore, these routes are full of stories and lifestyles interesting for travelers who enjoy deep travel experiences.
For those planning a trip to Takeo and wanting more information or how to buy bus tickets, I recommend purchasing through hotel agencies in Phnom Penh beforehand because the ticketing system in Cambodia may not be convenient for tourists unfamiliar with the local language. Alternatively, you can use Sorya Tour's direct service but check the latest bus schedules as they may change occasionally.
If you want to truly experience Khmer lifestyle, I, mr.hotsia, believe that taking the bus from Phnom Penh to Takeo is a worthwhile and memorable experience. This is not just an ordinary tourist route but a path that lets you experience the stories and simple way of life of the people.
Finally: Interesting connecting routes
After visiting Takeo, I recommend planning to continue to Kampot Province, which is very close to Takeo. From Kampot, you can easily travel to the coastal city of Sihanoukville, adding variety to your Cambodia trip with a mix of rural lifestyle and coastal atmosphere.
