Phnom Penh Bus Station, the starting point for travel in Cambodia
When it comes to traveling in Cambodia, what I, mr.hotsia, have encountered and want to share seriously is “Phnom Penh Bus Station,” which is the central hub for travel from the capital to various provinces, including connections to neighboring countries like Vietnam and Thailand.
The main bus station in Phnom Penh is conveniently located, not far from the Sorya Mall, a popular mall where I often rest, use free Wi-Fi, and enjoy the cool air while waiting for the bus. Importantly, this station is adjacent to Phnom Penh’s central market, a market similar to Rong Kluea but much cheaper. Here you can find a wide variety of clothes, shoulder bags, and souvenirs to choose from. I, mr.hotsia, always stop by to buy souvenirs here every time I visit Phnom Penh.
Experience buying tickets and boarding buses at the bus station
If you have traveled to Laos or Vietnam, you might be familiar with this kind of bus ticket purchasing system. Cambodia is quite similar. Most of the time, I don’t buy tickets directly at the station but through agents at hotels or accommodations because communication in Khmer at the bus station is not easy for foreigners. I, mr.hotsia, always use this method. The agents arrange for the bus to pick you up at the station, making it a convenient and safe system for travelers.
Most buses running in Cambodia are air-conditioned and in good condition, so you don’t have to worry about the heat. Although sometimes the air conditioning might not be as cold as expected, overall it’s good and comfortable. For example, I once took a bus from Sorya Tour Company from Phnom Penh to Takeo Province, which took about two and a half hours. There are four trips daily to choose from at convenient times (read more details atBus from Phnom Penh to Takeo Province)
Traveling from Phnom Penh to various provinces and neighboring countries
Phnom Penh Bus Station is not only a domestic passenger hub but also an important connection point for travel to neighboring countries such as Vietnam and Thailand. I, mr.hotsia, have traveled from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City and then continued by bus to Bangkok. The buses here serve all the main routes popular among tourists.
For travelers planning trips within Cambodia, using buses from Phnom Penh Bus Station is quite convenient because there are connections to major cities such as Siem Reap, Battambang, and even Oudong, the former capital city (read the story about Oudong atOudong City, Oudong, Phnom Penh)
Atmosphere and lifestyle around Phnom Penh Bus Station
Phnom Penh Bus Station is not just a place to wait for buses but also a reflection of Cambodian daily life. Around the station, there are lively fresh and wholesale markets. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy walking around these markets because I get to see food, goods, and daily life that are distinctly different from home. The markets here have plenty of fresh items, such as fish and seafood. If you want to fully experience the atmosphere of Phnom Penh’s fresh markets, I recommend watching my video atCambodian Wholesale Fish Market, Phnom Penh
Tips for travelers planning to use Phnom Penh Bus Station
From my personal experience traveling in Cambodia several times, planning to buy tickets through hotel agents makes the journey smoother because the staff will handle tickets and shuttle services completely. This is different from buying tickets at the station, where language barriers and complications may arise.
Also, when you arrive at the bus station, don’t forget to visit the nearby market to buy souvenirs and truly experience Cambodian lifestyle. There are many roadside food stalls offering Khmer dishes that are quite similar to Thai food (see more aboutKhmer Food). I, mr.hotsia, recommend trying Khmer roasted duck at a stall in the fresh market because it has a distinctive and delicious flavor. You can watch the atmosphere of eating Khmer roasted duck in my videoEating Khmer Roasted Duck in Phnom Penh
Summary of impressions and thoughts from mr.hotsia
For me, Phnom Penh Bus Station is not just an ordinary bus station but a gateway to tourism that allows us to experience the real lifestyle of Cambodian people. It is an important connection point that makes it convenient for travelers like me to explore various provinces. Although the ticketing system and communication have some limitations, there are clear solutions that make traveling easier.
If you have a chance to visit Phnom Penh, don’t forget to stop by this bus station and the surrounding markets to complete your experience of Cambodia’s capital city.
