Khmer food in Phnom Penh, the capital city full of authentic flavors and culture

Beforemr.hotsiaset off on a solo trip to explore Cambodia, one thing I was very curious about was what exactly do Cambodians eat? Are the flavors similar to Thai food? And for Thai tourists like us, is it easy to find food? When I arrived in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, the answer was “very easy and convenient.”

Phnom Penh is a lively city full of street food stalls and bustling fresh markets. I walked past curry rice shops with familiar menus priced at only 20-30 Thai Baht, which is very cheap compared to other capitals in the region. There are also takeaway food bags sold along the sidewalks, making eating very easy for Thai visitors.

What’s interesting is that Khmer food here is almost 100% similar to Thai food but with slight differences in ingredients and eating styles. For example, in northern Cambodia like Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, or Battambang, sticky rice is not commonly eaten. Even though familiar dishes like grilled chicken and papaya salad exist, they are eaten with regular rice only, which is clearly different from Thailand.

I have tried eating at clean and nice restaurants in Phnom Penh, ordering a full meal for no more than 100 Thai Baht. It was filling and delicious for the price. Or if you want to save even more, street food for just 30 Baht is easy to find. This is a great advantage of traveling in Cambodia, especially Phnom Penh, which offers both convenience and friendliness.

Experience Life and Flavors at Phnom Penh Fresh Market

One of my favorite experiences eating Khmer food in Phnom Penh was visiting the morning fresh market. These markets are full of fresh ingredients from vegetables and fruits to ducks and fresh fish with plenty of choices. I also recorded a videoDuck at Phnom Penh Morning Fresh Marketto show, which reflects the real life of Cambodians.

The fresh market is also a hub for traditional Khmer dishes that you can try, such as Khmer curry with its unique fragrant spices, spicy dipping sauces, and local desserts. I recommend strolling and eating at these small shops because not only will you taste authentic flavors, but you will also learn about Cambodian food culture firsthand.

Khmer Food by Region: A Variety Worth Exploring

From my multiple trips to Cambodia including Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Battambang, and other provinces across the country, I’ve learned that Khmer food varies by region. For example, in Kampong Chhnang, grilled catfish is popular, while northern areas bordering Laos have their own unique dishes. But one thing I noticed is that wherever you go, you can easily find food similar to Thai cuisine.

If you arrive in Phnom Penh, a city that blends ancient culture and modernity, I recommend stopping byPhnom Penh Fresh MarketHere you will see fresh food sources and authentic local eateries. There are also Thai restaurants for those who want to enjoy familiar flavors.

Travel and Experience Phnom Penh with Local Food Tastings

If you are planning a trip to Phnom Penh, I recommend using the bus service from Phnom Penh Bus Station, which I have detailed in an article.Phnom Penh Bus StationOr if you want to continue to other provinces like Takeo, you can find details atBus from Phnom Penh to Takeo Provincewhich will make your travel more convenient and economical.

After a tiring journey, stopping to taste authentic Khmer food in Phnom Penh is one of the joys I never miss. Once, I tried roasted duck at the morning fresh market; the flavor was rich and fragrant with spices, perfectly paired with hot steamed rice.
