Toul Sleng: The Terrifying Prison from the Khmer Rouge Era in Phnom Penh

When talking about places that reflect the cruelty and dark history of Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge era, "Toul Sleng," officially known asS-21 (Security Office 21)This prison means more than just a “museum” because it is a lesson of memory that must not be forgotten. I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to visit here myself. I can say the atmosphere and feelings experienced were profound and heavy beyond ordinary words.

Before becoming a torture prison for Khmer Rouge prisoners, this building was once a high school. But during 1975-1979, it was converted into a prison used to detain and torture many political prisoners. The number of prisoners increased shockingly each year—from 154 in 1975 to over 5,700 in 1978—not including more than 20,000 children killed during the same period.

Arriving at Toul Sleng – A Heart-Wrenching Silence

From my experience, mr.hotsia, visiting Toul Sleng should not be done very early in the morning or late at night because the silence and eerie atmosphere can weigh heavily on your mind and cause fear. Located in Phnom Penh, the capital city full of stories and cultural diversity, if you are interested in learning the intense history of Phnom Penh, I recommend planning your trip fromSiem Reap to Phnom Penhto experience both the grandeur of Angkor Wat and the harsh realities of history in this capital city.

The Toul Sleng prison area is surrounded by corrugated iron sheets and dense barbed wire to prevent escape. Inside, glass is installed on the walls of torture rooms to reduce prisoners’ screams. Wooden posts in the garden, once used for student exercise, were converted into torture devices, such as binding prisoners’ hands and arms behind their backs and suspending them until unconscious, or dunking prisoners’ heads into buckets filled with foul liquids like urine to force them to regain consciousness.

A Faint but Painful History

January 7, 1979, marked a turning point when the Cambodian government revealed all remaining evidence in the S-21 prison, including photographs, films, prisoner confessions, and fourteen victims’ bodies. This opened a door to the dark past for visitors. Toul Sleng Museum has since become a must-visit place for tourists and historians to learn about and remember the cruelty of the Khmer Rouge.

For tourists visiting Phnom Penh, a stop at Toul Sleng should be a main part of your itinerary along withother attractions in Phnom Penhsuch as the Royal Palace and the Killing Fields nearby. Visiting these two sites consecutively will deepen your understanding of the Khmer Rouge history.

Travel and What You Should Know Before Visiting

Visiting Toul Sleng is very convenient as it is located in central Phnom Penh. If you have just arrived from other cities, such as fromTakeo Provinceor from Phnom Penh Bus Station, which I have written about inmy article about Phnom Penh Bus StationHiring a car or using taxi services in Phnom Penh is also a comfortable option.

The entrance fee to Toul Sleng Museum is very affordable, just a few dozen baht. But what you gain back is much more valuable—both knowledge and a deeply moving experience. Along the prison corridors, there are displays of prisoner photographs, confessions, and torture devices preserved intact so visitors can see and feel the cruelty of a past that must never happen again.

mr.hotsia would like to leave you with this:

Toul Sleng is not a place that will make you feel comfortable or happy when visiting, but it is a place of memory essential for anyone who wants to truly understand Cambodia’s history. I, mr.hotsia, believe that visiting here will deepen your perspective on Cambodia. If you have time, try visiting the nearby Killing Fields to complete and clarify the memory.

After experiencing the silence and atmosphere of torture at Toul Sleng, take a walk around Phnom Penh, enjoy the lively fresh markets, or taste authentic Khmer food that I have recommended inmy Khmer food articleor observe riverside life along the Mekong River inPhnom Penh 2012which will perfectly complement your memorable trip.
