Phnom Penh Airport is close to the city, just a convenient 20-minute trip
If you travel to Cambodia, the first place I, mr.hotsia, usually encounter and feel the atmosphere of Phnom Penh is Phnom Penh International Airport. This airport is located only about 8 kilometers from downtown. Such a close distance makes traveling to the city center convenient and fast. I once landed and took a taxi into the city, which took only about 20 minutes.
The first feeling when stepping out of the terminal at Phnom Penh Airport is an atmosphere that is not hectic like big airports in some cities, but instead gives a warm feeling, like a small town with friendliness. I like this because it makes me feel like starting the trip comfortably without rushing too much.
Traveling from the airport to Phnom Penh city center offers several options, including taxis waiting outside the airport or hotel shuttle services. If you want to save on travel costs, I recommend negotiating taxi fares in advance or using ride-hailing apps, which are also convenient. The important thing is to choose a reliable taxi for safety and to avoid being overcharged.
The atmosphere around Phnom Penh Airport and the calmness of the capital city
When I travel from the airport into Phnom Penh, the route is filled with scenes of simple Cambodian life, traditional houses, and small roadside shops visible all along the way. It reminds me of traveling fromPhnom Penh Bus Station to Takeo Provincewhich I have described as a route full of rural lifestyle and impressive travel atmosphere.
Phnom Penh, although the capital city, still maintains calmness and is not as hectic as big cities in other countries I have visited. You will see locals living simply, a bustling fresh market not far from the airport, and the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers flowing through the city center, making the atmosphere fresh and charming.
Traveling from Phnom Penh Airport to key tourist attractions
From the airport to the city center is not far. You can stop to seePhnom Penh Royal Palacewhich is beautiful and a significant symbol of the city. Or if you want to learn about the intense history, you can go toPhnom Penh Bus Stationto buy tickets to travel to various tourist spots such as the Killing Fields or Udong city.
For those interested in traveling to other provinces from Phnom Penh, I have had the opportunity to use Soray Tour's air-conditioned buses to various provinces like Takeo, which takes about 2.5 hours. There are 4 departures daily from the main bus station. This travel option is convenient and offers views along the way filled with authentic Cambodian life and culture.
Experience local lifestyle and food near the airport
If you have time while waiting for transportation or want to experience the local atmosphere before continuing your journey, I recommend stopping by a fresh market in Phnom Penh city, which is not far from the airport. There you will find authentic Khmer food including fragrant roasted duck, as well as fresh seafood and vegetables attractively displayed. I have recorded the atmosphere of these fresh markets inPhnom Penh Fresh Market 2013and I can say that walking through the fresh market is one of the most memorable experiences from my trip to Cambodia.
Besides that, there are small roadside restaurants serving rich-flavored Khmer dishes like Cambodian wonton noodles or roasted duck dishes that are easy to find. I, mr.hotsia, did not miss trying and recording the story inKhmer Roasted Duck Eating Clip Phnom Penhto let fellow travelers see the images and feel like they are traveling together.
Travel plans after Phnom Penh Airport
After landing and entering Phnom Penh city, if you have more time, I recommend planning to travel to nearby provinces such as Udong, which was Cambodia's former capital before Phnom Penh replaced it. Udong is about 30 kilometers from Phnom Penh and is a great spot for those who love history and nature.Read about Udong from my experience here
Or if you want to travel to Takeo province south of Phnom Penh, you can also use the bus service I recommended. Besides experiencing rural atmosphere and authentic Cambodian communities, it is a great opportunity to learn about the culture and lifestyle of Khmer people in each area.Read detailed travel from Phnom Penh to Takeowhich I have recorded.

Experiencing the roadside atmosphere between the airport and the city allows you to truly feel the life and culture of the locals.
