Riverside at the Mekong River Lake, Phnom Penh: Experience the life and lifestyle of Cambodia's capital city

When talking about Phnom Penh through the eyes of mr.hotsia, I imagine the capital city located by the Mekong River and Tonle Sap River, two large rivers converging here before flowing on to Vietnam. These rivers clearly give life and freshness to Phnom Penh. If I were to mention the place that impressed me the most in Phnom Penh, it would be the “Riverside at the Mekong River Lake.” This area is not just an ordinary riverside but the heart of the city's life. Here, I can truly experience the local way of life.

Walking along the riverside in the evening, I saw locals coming out to stroll and relax with their families. Vendors set up simple stalls selling goods. The aroma of local food filled the air, mixed with the sounds of boats passing by, including cargo boats and small tourist boats. Seeing this scene, mr.hotsia felt like stepping back to a time when trade and city life depended mainly on the river as in the past.

Lifestyle along the Mekong River in Phnom Penh

The Mekong River in Phnom Penh is not only beautiful in scenery but also full of activities that reflect the culture and lifestyle of the Cambodian people. I had the chance to take a boat ride to see the views of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers, observing riverside houses, some still living simply, fishing, and small-scale farming. There is also a small floating market where vendors sell fresh produce and processed goods right by the water. This reminded me of my previous trip wherePhnom Penh Fresh Market 2013which is a bustling market offering many Khmer food options to taste.

In the early morning, the riverside atmosphere is especially lively. I once woke up early to see the fresh duck market by the river atDuck, Phnom Penh Morning Fresh Marketwhich is full of vendors preparing breakfast for locals and tourists wanting to try authentic Khmer food.

Riverside Food: The Flavors and Aromas of Phnom Penh

Speaking of riverside food in Phnom Penh, I never miss trying the famous roasted duck here. From my experience, mr.hotsia, I followed to taste the original roasted duck at a riverside restaurant in Phnom Penh. The aroma of spices and crispy duck skin made me stop eating several times to record clips (watch atEating Khmer Roasted Duck Phnom Penh). Besides roasted duck, riverside food also includes fresh river fish dishes prepared in authentic Khmer style, such as fish tom yum, coconut curry, and sticky rice eaten perfectly together.

For travelers who enjoy trying new foods, I recommend walking along the riverside in the evening, where many restaurants line the street by the river. You can sit and enjoy fresh food with views of the Mekong River accompanied by traditional music, giving a real taste of local life.

Travel and Tourism Around Phnom Penh

As a traveler who has visited Phnom Penh many times, I, mr.hotsia, recommend that arriving in Phnom Penh is quite convenient, especially if coming from the major tourist city of Siem Reap, which I have traveled by bus before (read the full story atTraveling from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh). The bus passes through rural areas and small towns that still maintain traditional lifestyles for us to admire.

In Phnom Penh itself, the public transport system has a main bus station that I have described in detail in the articlePhnom Penh Bus Stationwhich is the central hub for buses to various provinces and even neighboring countries like Vietnam and Thailand.

If you have more time than just touring Phnom Penh city, I recommend planning a trip to nearby Ta Keo province, where I once took an air-conditioned bus by Sorya Tour company from Phnom Penh to Ta Keo. The bus runs only a few times a day (read the full review atBus from Phnom Penh to Ta Keo Province). The trip is not difficult but requires good planning as the buses are infrequent.

The Beauty of Phnom Penh Beyond the River

The Mekong River in Phnom Penh is just one part of this city, but if you want to experience deep history and culture, I recommend visitingPhnom Penh Royal PalaceandUdong Citywhich is the old capital of Cambodia, a place full of stories and interesting architecture.

For me, mr.hotsia, traveling to experience the life and lifestyle of Phnom Penh people by the Mekong River is like opening a door to the true Cambodia. It is not just beautiful images or tourist attractions arranged for visitors but seeing the real life of the people here, feeling the unique atmosphere of living, which makes me want to come back again and again.

If you are planning a trip to Cambodia, don't forget to stop by Phnom Penh and stroll along the riverside at the Mekong River Lake. I guarantee mr.hotsia will not disappoint you.
