Nightlife in Phnom Penh: Experience the riverside nights along the Mekong with mr.hotsia
When talking about Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, many think of important tourist spots like the Royal Palace, temples, and the intense history of the Khmer Rouge. But for mr.hotsia, Phnom Penh at night has its own charm and vibrant colors. I want to invite everyone to join me for a real experience of the local lifestyle by strolling through the city’s nightlife.
Start the night with roasted whole cow behind Wat Unalom
The area I recommend to start your night is behind Wat Unalom, a lively spot full of restaurants and bars in Phnom Penh. The highlight here is the Phnom Penh roasted whole cow restaurant that I really like. In the past, they used to display a live cow in front of the shop, but now it’s prohibited. They roast the cow behind the shop and bring it out to grill in front instead. The aroma of grilled meat is incredibly mouthwatering.
If you want to try something unusual, don’t miss the street food sold by kids walking around, such as grilled snake carried by young women, or even raw duck and goose eggs which are rare to find at home. There’s also Kebab Ang, a Khmer-style grilled meat. All of these are the colorful highlights of Phnom Penh’s nightlife that impressed mr.hotsia a lot.
Stroll in the capital city atmosphere along the Mekong River
After fueling up with roasted whole cow and unusual snacks, I usually take a walk along the Mekong River and Tonle Sap River flowing through Phnom Penh. These two rivers are the charm that makes the city lively at all times, especially at night. The decorative lights along the riverside paths contrast with the moonlight, creating an atmosphere you won’t want to miss.
If you want a wide-angle view of Phnom Penh, I recommend going to the Royal Palace or nearby areas in the evening. It’s another spot where tourists and locals come to relax. At night, several riverside restaurants open for service as well.
Travel and preparation for Phnom Penh nightlife
For traveling to Phnom Penh from other provinces in Cambodia, such as Siem Reap or Takeo, mr.hotsia recommends buying tickets through agencies at hotels or accommodations because Cambodia’s transport system is still not very convenient for direct communication. Especially at Phnom Penh bus station, you can check information and bus schedules fromPhnom Penh Bus Stationwhich I have written about before
If you plan to fully enjoy Phnom Penh both day and night, I suggest planning ahead and saving energy for the night tour. The area behind Wat Unalom that I recommend is not only good for roasted whole cow but also has many bars and local food options. Sitting and chilling while eating and drinking in this atmosphere is a true way to experience the real life of Phnom Penh people.
If you want to continue traveling after Phnom Penh
After enjoying the night in Phnom Penh, if you have time, mr.hotsia recommends traveling to nearby provinces like Takeo or going deeper to Oudong, the old capital of Cambodia, which is very interesting.Oudong City, Oudong, Phnom PenhIt’s another destination I want you to experience.
For those traveling from Siem Reap, I have shared my experience traveling with Soraya company in an articleBus from Phnom Penh to Takeo Provincethat will help you plan your trip more conveniently because routes and bus schedules in Cambodia still require good preparation.
