Preah Vihear Hotels – Real Experiences from mr.hotsia
Preah Vihear Province in Cambodia is one of the provinces I, mr.hotsia, have had the opportunity to explore from many perspectives, including its historical city and the local way of life. One thing I clearly noticed is that accommodation prices here are quite higher than expected. For those planning to visit or stay overnight, this is real information I gathered from the field to share with you.
Phnom Tbeng Meanchey – The Starting Point for Finding Accommodation
The capital of Preah Vihear Province is Phnom Tbeng Meanchey, which serves as the center for travel and rest before visiting important sites such as Preah Vihear Temple or Koh Ker.
From my direct experience, mr.hotsia, accommodation in this city is quite expensive compared to other provinces in Cambodia. Even simple guesthouses start at around 600 baht per night, despite some lacking full amenities. For example, the hotel I stayed at, “27 May Guesthouse,” had air conditioning but no WiFi, and the rooms still smelled of smoke. If you ask me why prices are so high, I don’t have a clear answer yet.
Recommended Accommodation and Interesting Locations
If you want accommodation with WiFi in Phnom Tbeng Meanchey, I recommend looking for hotels near the Soraya bus station next to Tbeng Meanchey Transport. There are about four hotels in town there, and one offers WiFi service. Although I didn’t inquire about prices in detail, I think the rates might be more reasonable because of the added convenience of internet access for travelers.
Additionally, if you plan to visit the ancient pyramids at Koh Ker, there is a small village with guesthouses near the pyramid entrance. Although I, mr.hotsia, did not stay there, it is an interesting option for those who want to explore the archaeological site without returning to Phnom Tbeng Meanchey every day.
As for the area near Preah Vihear Temple on the Cambodian side, I don’t have exact accommodation information yet, but I expect there are guesthouses scattered around the lower checkpoint area. If you are interested in exploring the temple closely, you might try contacting locals or tourism officials in the area for more details.
Travel and Accommodation Planning in Preah Vihear Province
Regarding travel to Preah Vihear Province, I have written in an articleTraveling to Preah Vihear Province (Pei Vihear)that the main option is to travel through Siem Reap to Kampong Thom, then continue by car to Preah Vihear. This route allows you to see the scenery and atmosphere of rural Cambodia, different from the big city of Siem Reap.
If you have a bigger budget, you might choose to hire a taxi from Siem Reap directly to Tbeng Meanchey. The price I heard at the time was about 50 US dollars (1,500 baht), including a stop at Koh Ker. This is a convenient and worthwhile option if traveling in a small group.
Another option I mentioned before is hiring a taxi with a driver from Poipet for a full-day or multi-day trip to Preah Vihear Province. If you are a group of 4-5 people, the cost is about 300 baht per person per day, including fuel and driver’s meals and accommodation. This method offers more flexibility in choosing stops and accommodations according to your preferences.
Atmosphere and Local Life in Phnom Tbeng Meanchey
Besides accommodation, what impressed me, mr.hotsia, is the market atmosphere in this town, especiallyPhnom Tbeng Meanchey Marketwhich is the center for both morning and evening markets. The morning market is full of colors from fresh vegetables, fruits, and various ingredients, similar to the market in Kampong Chhnang Province I have visited. There are large eggplants that are rare and many unusual ingredients to see.
Local food is easy to find. In the evening in front of the market, there are stalls selling steamed beef offal with fermented fish chili dip that is very delicious. The dipping sauce is rich and moderately spicy, typical of Cambodian cuisine. There are also made-to-order dishes and noodles sold in the morning market and along the streets nearby. For dinner, I usually choose to eat by the roadside at a small public square, which is quiet and very chill. You can read more details inLocal Food in Phnom Tbeng Meanchey, Preah Vihear Province
Summary and Recommendations for Travelers
For those planning to visit Preah Vihear Province and looking for accommodation, I, mr.hotsia, want you to be prepared for higher accommodation prices than expected. Some places may not have full amenities like in big cities. However, if you choose accommodation in Phnom Tbeng Meanchey near the Soraya bus station, you will get convenience and internet access, which is important for communication and travel planning.
If you have the chance, don’t forget to visitKoh Kerwhich is an ancient pyramid of the Khmer Empire about 100 kilometers from Preah Vihear. It is best to plan your trip properly to avoid excessive fatigue.
Finally, I recommend anyone interested in this travel story to read more of my articles at mr.hotsia aboutTraveling in Preah Vihear Provincewhich will help you understand the overall picture and prepare better.
