Local Food in Tbeng Meanchey, Preah Vihear Province
When talking about Preah Vihear Province, many people probably think of the Preah Vihear Temple or Koh Ker, the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire. But for mr.hotsia, another thing not to miss is the “local food” in Tbeng Meanchey, the capital city of this province. Although it’s not a major tourist city, it is full of charm from the local lifestyle and truly delicious flavors.
I traveled here via Siem Reap, then took a bus through Kampong Thom to Preah Vihear (details about the journey can be found atTraveling to Preah Vihear Province), which is considered the most convenient main route. Since the checkpoint at Preah Vihear Temple is not yet an international border, travel requires advance planning. Tbeng Meanchey city is simple and unpretentious but offers a lot to discover, including fresh markets, roadside eateries, and a dinner I highly recommend you don’t miss.
Tbeng Meanchey Market: The Starting Point to Taste Local Food
Tbeng Meanchey Market is the community’s central hub. It has both a morning and evening market in the same area, but the morning market is livelier and more colorful. Most products are fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, and fresh cooking ingredients. I walked around the market and saw large eggplants similar to those I encountered in Kampong Chhnang—unusual and very interesting. In the morning, for those who like simple meals, the market has pork rice and noodle shops. The flavors are not as spicy as in Thailand but are mild and use fresh, clean ingredients—perfect for fueling up before exploring the city. From my experience, these shops are not spacious but are usually full of locals eating there, showing that the food here is authentic local cuisine, not made for tourists.
Steamed Beef Offal with Fermented Fish Sauce Dip - A Must-Try Flavor
In the evening, I went to the front of the market, which turns into a place for made-to-order food and street stalls. There’s one shop selling steamed beef offal that I really like. This shop serves it with a fermented fish sauce dip that I tried and can honestly say is “really amazing.” The flavor is rich, sour, salty, slightly sweet, and has a fragrant fermented fish aroma that’s not overpowering. Eating it with the tender steamed beef offal is a perfect combination.
Besides this shop, the evening market atmosphere includes general made-to-order food stalls such as stir-fried vegetables, omelets, or fried rice. What stands out is that the food retains its original taste and is not adjusted to international or overly sweet flavors like in big cities. I recommend walking around and trying shops that locals frequently visit to truly experience the authentic taste of Preah Vihear.
Dinner by the Roadside in a Small Park in Tbeng Meanchey
After exploring the market and eating steamed beef offal, I chose to have dinner at a roadside made-to-order food stall located in a small park-like area. The atmosphere is chill and the street in the city is not too busy. This place offers a variety of dishes, from stir-fried vegetables and pork salad to rich, authentic Khmer curries. I like that this place feels like eating at a local’s home, not a tourist restaurant.

Khmer Bamboo Sticky Rice - A Snack I Also Loved
On the way back from Koh Ker, one of Preah Vihear’s important tourist sites, I stopped to try traditional Khmer bamboo sticky rice sold by the roadside. Here, the bamboo used is small, unlike the large ones at home, and no sugar or coconut milk is added. Instead, a little salt is used. The taste is slightly salty with the natural aroma of roasted sticky rice in bamboo. It doesn’t feel guilty like regular sweets and is a perfect travel snack. Eating in Preah Vihear is Experiencing Life and Culture
What impressed me more than the food’s taste was the atmosphere and lifestyle of the people in Tbeng Meanchey. Every time I ate made-to-order food or walked through the market, I saw people living simply but full of warmth and kindness. Small shops selling steamed beef offal or vendors selling pork rice every morning are part of the essence of Preah Vihear that I don’t want you to miss.
If you are planning a trip to Preah Vihear, I recommend looking beyond just the famous tourist spots and opening your heart to try local food once or twice. I guarantee you will deeply feel the sincerity of the people here through the flavors.
