Opening the Door to the Ancient Capital Koh Ker, the Khmer Pyramid in the Heart of Preah Vihear Forest
Hello, I am mr.hotsia. I had the chance to travel toPreah Vihear ProvinceCambodia to experience the almost forgotten ancient heritage of “Koh Ker,” also known to many as the “Khmer Pyramid.” It was the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire before Angkor Wat became famous. This archaeological site offers a very different feeling when experienced in person compared to photos in books or on the internet.
Koh Ker, the Ancient Capital Hidden Deep in the Forest
Koh Ker is located in Preah Vihear Province, about 100 kilometers north of Siem Reap. It was established during the reign of King Jayavarman IV around 921-944 AD. Previously, it was little known because the city was covered by dense forest and forgotten for over 1,000 years until archaeologists rediscovered it in 2003. This discovery revealed that Koh Ker was once the center of the Khmer Empire before Angkor Wat was built.
The most impressive feature for me was “Prasat Thom,” also called the “Koh Ker Pyramid.” This pyramid-shaped structure has steep stone staircases leading to the temple’s summit. The staircase is nicknamed the “Road to Heaven” because climbing it feels like ascending to the heavens.
Travel and Atmosphere at Koh Ker
Traveling to Koh Ker is not easy because it is located deep in the forest and quite far from major towns. I chose to hire a taxi from Phnom Tbeng Meanchey, the capital of Preah Vihear Province. The round-trip cost was about 50 USD, including stops for sightseeing. You can read detailed travel information in the article.Traveling to Preah Vihear ProvinceThank you.
Upon arriving at the Koh Ker entrance, I had to buy an entrance ticket for about 10 USD, which is reasonable for seeing such a rare archaeological site with few tourists. The surroundings were peaceful and densely forested, with birdsong and the wind rustling leaves. I hardly saw any other tourists. This is the charm of Koh Ker, very different from the bustling main tourist spots in Siem Reap.
Climbing the Pyramid and Enjoying the Panoramic View
I explored around Prasat Thom and saw that the pyramid was built with large stones, surrounded by thick city walls cleverly designed to protect against attacks. Currently, access to the pyramid summit is restricted due to safety concerns, but some locals offer guided climbs for about 10 USD. I did not climb because officials seemed reluctant to allow it, so I took photos and videos from below instead.
From the top of this temple, if accessible, you would see views of the Preah Vihear mountains and the distant Kulen Mountains. Such views are not commonly seen by tourists.
Life and Food in Nearby Phnom Tbeng Meanchey
After visiting Koh Ker, I rested in Phnom Tbeng Meanchey, the capital of Preah Vihear Province, which has lively fresh markets in the morning and evening. I tried several local dishes, such as steamed beef offal with fermented fish chili sauce, which was spicy and very appealing to my Thai palate. There are also noodle shops and simple made-to-order meals available.

Accommodation and Travel Precautions
In the Koh Ker area, there are small guesthouses in villages before the temple entrance. For more comfort, you can stay in Phnom Tbeng Meanchey city, which has some hotels and accommodations. Although accommodation prices in Preah Vihear Province are relatively high compared to other parts of Cambodia, I stayed at 27 May Guesthouse for about 600 THB per night. Additionally, a health and safety reminder: the forest area near Koh Ker has malaria risks, and some areas still contain unexploded landmines from the past. Therefore, do not venture deep into the forest without a guide or official escort.
Summary of Experience and Impressions
Koh Ker is a place I found very worthwhile to visit. Although it is not an easy destination for general tourists, for those who love ancient sites and want to experience the secrets of the Khmer Empire in a truly peaceful atmosphere, this place is an excellent choice.
Traveling throughPreah Vihear Provincealso offers close encounters with local life and culture, including unique and flavorful local dishes. I, mr.hotsia, recommend Koh Ker as one of the must-visit places for history lovers and adventure seekers.
