Travel to Oddar Meancheay Province, Cambodia with mr.hotsia

Oddar Meancheay Province, pronounced by Cambodians as Oddar MeanCheay, is located at the northernmost part of Cambodia. The province's name comes from “Oddar” meaning north and “Meancheay” meaning victory, together meaning “Victory in the North.” This reflects its geographical position bordering Thailand's Surin Province. It also shares a southern border with Siem Reap Province. The capital city of this province is Samrong.

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit here myself and want to share my real experiences that many may not know. This province is less developed compared to other provinces in Cambodia. Many areas still lack roads and electricity. Locals live simply, still using wooden carts for transport. I spoke with locals who speak Thai on the bus. Seeing this reality made me feel that Oddar Meancheay retains the charm of traditional lifestyles, unlike the busy main tourist spots.

Traveling to Samrong City and Oddar Meancheay Province

For Thai travelers, crossing into Oddar Meancheay Province is very convenient with two permanent border checkpoints: O'Smach/Chong Chom in Surin Province and Chong Sa Ngam in Sisaket Province. Chong Sa Ngam connects to Chong Jom in Allong Veng District, Oddar Meancheay Province. This route is very convenient and takes about 135 kilometers to Siem Reap.

I recommend that if you travel to Samrong from Chong Chom checkpoint, be prepared for the transportation system. There are no regular buses; you must use taxis, which are few and quite expensive. When I went, the initial price was nearly 100 USD (about 3,000 THB) for 40 kilometers. After bargaining, I paid only 25 USD (around 750 THB), which was reasonable. If you don’t bargain, waiting for a ride or sharing with other tourists is a good option.Read detailed travel information from Chong Chom checkpoint to SamrongBased on my direct experience

The road from the checkpoint to Siem Reap is a two-lane road but in very good condition and convenient for driving. Although they drive on the right side like Western countries, unlike Thailand, you must be careful if driving yourself. Overall, travel is convenient and fast.

Samrong City: A Small City Worth Exploring

Samrong, the provincial capital, is usually just a transit town for tourists heading to Siem Reap, so it doesn’t have many overnight visitors. But for me, mr.hotsia, I like this quiet small town because it offers an authentic glimpse of local life. I spent early mornings walking around the Samrong morning market.Walking through Samrong Morning MarketEnjoy the colors and atmosphere of locals shopping. The smell of fresh food and vendors’ calls remind me of traditional markets back home.

After that, I visited a temple in Samrong to make merit.Read about my merit-making experience at a temple in SamrongI saw locals dressed in white traditional clothes and witnessed a lifestyle blending beliefs that deeply impressed me. It was a peaceful time that allowed me to absorb authentic Khmer culture profoundly.

Food in Samrong

Food in Samrong was another highlight. I tried a curry rice shop in front of ACLEDA Bank with a fish soup called “Triple” by locals, which was so good I returned. There was also a grilled pork stall in front of the market always crowded. The pork was tender and fragrant with authentic Khmer grilling flavors.Read about Samrong cuisine in Oddar MeancheayFor details and locations of recommended restaurants

In the evening, I relaxed eating at a small corner street restaurant with an atmosphere like an old Thai movie. Pork transport trucks passed by, creating an unforgettable scene.

Accommodation and Local Transportation

There are few accommodations in Samrong. I stayed at a small hotel opposite ACLEDA Bank, costing only a few hundred baht per night. The room had air conditioning but no WIFI. The owner spoke Thai and helped arrange taxis at much cheaper rates than going alone. For those without private vehicles, taxis are the only way to get around the province. You can also hire a taxi from Samrong to Siem Reap for 30 USD (about 900 THB), which I think is very reasonable for the distance and convenience.

Interesting Routes and Border Checkpoints

If you’re looking for an alternative route to Siem Reap from Thailand, Oddar Meancheay Province is a good and closer option than Poipet checkpoint. I have recommended the Chong Sa Ngam route connecting from Sisaket Province. This area has the new town of Chong Sa Ngam, which is the center of government offices and a passenger transport station.Read detailed travel information from Surin to Chong Chom and Banteay MeancheyEspecially the Chong Sa Ngam to Siem Reap route, which is convenient and takes less than half a day.

Both checkpoints, O'Smach/Chong Chom and Chong Sa Ngam/Allong Veng, are permanent and allow same-day round trips, ideal for those wanting to visit Siem Reap without long and complicated border crossings.

Summary of Traveling in Oddar Meancheay

For me, Oddar Meancheay Province reveals the simplicity of Khmer people still living traditionally. Although it lacks famous tourist spots, the atmosphere in Samrong city with its morning market, temples, and local food made me feel like I discovered another side of Cambodia that most tourists don’t know.

If you enjoy in-depth travel, local lifestyles, and bargaining taxi prices (which I say is an art of traveling in Cambodia), Oddar Meancheay is a great starting point for a cross-border trip from Northeastern Thailand to Cambodia.
