Samrong Food, Oddar Meancheay Province, Cambodia
If you travel to Samrong city, the capital of Oddar Meancheay province located in northern Cambodia near the Thai-Cambodian border, you will experience the charming local cuisine with a distinct taste unlike anywhere else. From my personal experience, Mr.Hotsia must say that the food here is interesting and delicious without much need for extra seasoning.
Starting at a small curry rice shop located in front of ACLEDA Bank in Samrong city. This shop is a destination I never miss when I arrive because it has a fish soup dish that I really like. The Khmer people call this dishTripleThe word “Tri” means fish. As for “ple,” I still don’t know the exact meaning. You have to try it yourself to understand how rich and balanced the flavor is. This fish soup has a slightly sour and spicy taste, made with fresh ingredients caught from nearby rivers, giving it a unique fish flavor in this region.
Not far from there, I walked to the Samrong morning market, where there is a grilled pork rice shop very popular among locals. This shop is right in front of the market and is crowded almost every morning. The grilled pork here is marinated with Khmer spices. The aroma of herbs and the perfect sweet and salty taste make the pork tender and not tough. This is a dish Mr.Hotsia recommends for a satisfying breakfast.
Nearby, there is also a noodle shop favored by the people of Samrong, but I have not tried it yet. Although I saw it crowded and the atmosphere was very friendly, I am confident the taste would be as good as the other dishes I have tried.
Evening atmosphere in Samrong
In the evening, if you want to relax and chill, I, Mr.Hotsia, recommend sitting at the restaurant on the corner at the entrance to Samrong market. The atmosphere here reminds me of old Thai movies where the hero visits a provincial town. There are often pork transport trucks passing by, creating a simple and warm feeling, like stepping back in time.
For tourists interested in nightlife, most nightclubs in Samrong are located in alleys near ACLEDA Bank, not far from the curry rice shop and morning market. However, Mr.Hotsia advises not to stay out too late in this town because I felt a bit uneasy with the evening market atmosphere, especially when passing by and hearing repeated shouts of “Phra Vihear, Phra Vihear, Phra Vihear,” which made me slightly uncomfortable. Although most people and shops seem normal and without problems.
Lifestyle and Food in Samrong
I, Mr.Hotsia, have had the chance to stroll through the Samrong morning market several times. The market is not large but full of color and true vitality, especially the food sold, mostly local dishes and fresh local produce such as fish, fresh vegetables, and various seasonings that villagers sell unhurriedly.
I once bought grilled sticky rice from this market to make merit at a temple in Samrong city, which was a very impressive experience because I saw the lifestyle of Khmer people here — children, women, and students dressed in white shirts and traditional skirts going to make merit and give alms peacefully and devoutly. This is another side of Samrong that I want Thai people to experience.
