Making merit at temples in Samrong Town, Oddar Meanchey Province, Cambodia

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to explore the lifestyle of the Khmer people in Samrong Town, Oddar Meanchey Province, also called “Oddar Meanchey” by the locals. This is a small town in northern Cambodia, bordering Thailand at Chong Jom-O Somed checkpoint. Samrong may not be a major tourist destination like Siem Reap, but it has a charming local appeal, especially in its culture of making merit and the simple yet profound daily life.

One morning after walking around the Samrong morning market,a vibrant fresh market filled with the aroma of local food,I stopped to buy grilled sticky rice from a market stall as a small offering for the monks at the temple. Then I had grilled pork rice at a famous stall in front of the market recommended by locals.Samrong Local CuisineThe flavors here are not too spicy but well-balanced and fresh. The grilled pork at that stall had a delightful smoky aroma from firewood that was very memorable.

On my way back to the accommodation, I noticed a group of Khmer people dressed in clean white clothes walking in a line toward the community temple. Curious about their merit-making ritual, I decided to follow them. Luckily, I still had the grilled sticky rice I bought from the market with me.

Merit-Making Traditions at Samrong Temple

Upon entering the temple, I was deeply impressed by the scene: schoolgirls in uniform ready to offer alms, monks seated in the pavilion, and women dressed in white tops with traditional skirts, wearing their attire with utmost respect. I learned from the Khmer people that “women going to the temple must wear white tops and skirts,” symbolizing purity and respect for Buddhism.

The morning merit-making atmosphere was peaceful and friendly. I saw many people offering cooked rice and dry food to monks, some giving essential items. Afterwards, they listened to the monks’ sermons in the pavilion. Some also bathed in the temple’s pond, a custom for cleansing before starting the day. This is a rare sight in big cities and made me feel close to nature and the traditional Khmer culture.

Meaning and Importance of Merit-Making in the Community

Merit-making in Samrong is not just a religious activity but also a community gathering that builds relationships and unity among locals. I saw children offering alms before school as a way to start the day with a pure heart, and adults showing sincere respect to the monks.

On regular days, the temple pavilion is almost full of villagers attending sermons and donating. I once witnessed a big merit-making event during the Khmer New Year in Krachea, where men and women dressed fully in traditional attire, showing true pride and strength in their culture.

Samrong Town and Travel Convenience

For travelers interested in experiencing life here, traveling from the Chong Jom-O Somed border checkpoint to Samrong requires a taxi or private car, as there is no direct public bus service. I negotiated with taxi drivers here and got prices around 10-25 USD for about 40 kilometers.Read detailed travel information from Chong Jom to SamrongNegotiating taxi fares requires patience and preparation.

Samrong is not a large town but has the charm of a border town blending traditional culture and lifestyle harmoniously. If you plan to visit Oddar Meanchey Province, I recommend stopping by here first to see a different perspective from the main tourist cities.Read more about Oddar Meanchey Province

Samrong Market and Breakfast

Before or after visiting the temple, I often stroll around the Samrong morning market,a lively place and community hub. Here you can find many foods, such as the grilled sticky rice I bought for the monks, or the grilled pork rice stall in front of the market that is always crowded, as I mentioned in my articleSamrong Local CuisineThe grilled pork here has a smoky firewood aroma and tender texture, making it a perfect breakfast to energize the day’s journey.

If you want to relax in the evening in Samrong, small coffee shops or eateries at the market corners offer a chill atmosphere, reminiscent of old Thai movies where the hero sits in a small town with pork carts passing by. This scene made me feel closer to the daily life of the locals.

Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia

Following the Khmer people to make merit at the temple in Samrong was a deeply impressive experience for me, mr.hotsia. I witnessed real lifestyles of people who strongly preserve their customs and culture. Although this town is not heavily visited by tourists, the simplicity and humility of the people make me want to return again.

If you love cultural travel and want to experience the true Khmer life, I recommend visiting the Samrong morning market, eating grilled pork rice, and joining the locals in making merit at the temple. I guarantee you will have a unique experience in Oddar Meanchey Province.
