Boeng Yeak Lom: The wonder of Ratanakiri that mr.hotsia must share
If you have the chance to visitBanlung city, Ratanakiri provinceCambodia, one thing I, mr.hotsia, believe you must not miss is “Boeng Yeak Lom,” also known in English asBoeng Yeak LomA large freshwater lake hidden just 4 kilometers from Banlung city center.
This lake is not just an ordinary water source but an ancient volcanic crater that is about 700,000 years old! Yes, seven hundred thousand years since this lake was formed, and it still maintains its beautiful round shape true to its name “Yeak Lom,” with a diameter of approximately 800 meters and a depth of 50 meters, which is quite extraordinary for a lake in this region.
Travel and atmosphere around Boeng Yeak Lom
I, mr.hotsia, chose to ride a motorcycle from Banlung city to Boeng Yeak Lom, which took about 10-15 minutes, then spent around 1 hour exploring and relaxing. The round-trip motorcycle fare was about 10 US dollars (which is reasonable). The route to the lake is straightforward, the roads are quite good, and the views along the way are filled with nature that still preserves the richness of forests and diverse wildlife.
Boeng Yeak Lom offers not only the beauty of clear emerald green water reflecting the sky but also a forest trail around the lake for full nature exploration. It takes about 40 minutes to walk along the western path of the lake. Along the way, you can spot rare birds and large butterflies, some with wingspans up to 20 centimeters. The atmosphere makes me feel as if I have stepped into another world.
Swimming experience in an ancient volcanic crater
Before coming here, I planned just to enjoy the view, sit, and take photos to capture the atmosphere. But when I saw the clear, cool water, I couldn’t resist and decided to swim in the lake. I must say, the cold water and 50-meter depth made it very exciting. The water here is clean and refreshing, like swimming in a natural pool hardly touched by humans.
The feeling of floating in this round lake is a special experience not easily found in life. I imagined that ancient creatures might still be hiding beneath the deep water! But of course, I was safe and fully enjoyed this swim. I recommend anyone visiting Boeng Yeak Lom to bring a swimsuit to fully enjoy this unique experience.
Tourist center and local products
At Boeng Yeak Lom, there is a small tourist center exhibiting the history and nature of the lake, as well as a shop selling local handicrafts such as traditional music instruments, slingshots, woven baskets, scarves, and handwoven fabric bags. I, mr.hotsia, bought a handwoven fabric piece as a souvenir. The craftsmanship and stories behind each item made me feel deeply connected to the locals and their culture.
Connecting travel experiences in Ratanakiri
If you plan to visit Ratanakiri and want to fully experience the lifestyle of Banlung locals, I recommend exploring the morning marketBanlung Morning Marketwhich is vibrant and lively with local foods and fresh products sold by villagers in a simple, ground-seated style. It feels warm and welcoming, as if you become part of this community.
For accommodation in Banlung city, I have stayed atRatanak Sky Inn Guesthousewhich offers WIFI and air conditioning for comfort at an affordable price, suitable for travelers like me who want to rest after exploring nature and local life.
