Local Cuisine of the Charming Town Rattanak Kiri – Flavors that Tell the Stories of Ban Lung People
When talking about Rattanak Kiri Province or Ban Lung Town, Cambodia, many might picture mountains, forests, or the giant wind lake that is a highlight here. But for me, mr.hotsia, another equally impressive thing islocal foodthat clearly reflects the lifestyle and culture of Ban Lung people. Although this town seems remote and less developed compared to the capital, its food scene is surprisingly diverse and exciting.
In Ban Lung, Rattanak Kiri, there are many restaurants scattered around, far more than in Mondulkiri Province. Most are small eateries serving rice with curry or rice porridge shops popular among locals at night. I tried several places and felt the flavors here are extraordinary. My favorite was a small shop near the fresh market selling simple rice with curry but with bold and harmonious flavors that made me order several extra plates.
Walking around the market near Ban Lung, what caught my eye was “fried snake,” a rare and unusual dish not commonly found in big cities. Here, fried snake is sold alongside fried insects, which locals eat without surprise. Sometimes, piles of king cobra are sold too. I still haven’t dared to try it myself, but for those seeking a flavor challenge like the locals, it’s worth trying once. As for me, I just stood by to watch and take photos to capture the atmosphere.
For dinner, I usually eat at a rice porridge shop called “Bobor,” located in front of the guesthouse where I stayed in downtown Ban Lung. This shop is very popular among locals, especially for the white rice porridge called “Bobor So,” with “So” meaning white. The porridge is served with simple side dishes like salted egg, shredded pork, pickled vegetables, and salted fish. Anyone who has eaten rice porridge in Ban Lung knows there’s no need to add pepper because the side dishes and broth are already perfectly balanced. It’s a dinner that made me feel like eating homemade food that anyone can make deliciously.
For those wanting to experience the morning market atmosphere, I recommend walkingBan Lung Morning Market, Rattanak KiriThis is a large and surprisingly lively market. Locals sell goods in a traditional way, and the market looks clean and orderly. The highlight is the variety of snacks I really like, such as roasted rice and grilled cassava, plus many other items worth trying to take back to your room or as souvenirs. This helps support locals and ensures you get fresh food.
Additionally, in front of the market, there is a steamed shellfish stall that impressed me a lot. Fresh shellfish steamed hot with a sprinkle of salt tastes sweet and crunchy. Here, shellfish are sold fresh; some shops sun-dry them for sale, but I haven’t dared to try that for fear of stomach upset. For those wanting fresh and hot shellfish, I highly recommend this stall. It’s truly delicious.
The Origin of Food and Culture in Ban Lung
Rattanak Kiri is a province located in northeastern Cambodia, bordering Laos and Vietnam. It is home to many ethnic minorities and has a culture blending Khmer, Lao, and Thai influences, giving its cuisine a unique character. If you visit here, tasting local food will help you better understand the lifestyle and spirit of the people.
Another special feature of Ban Lung is the nighttime atmosphere at the night market in front of the hotel where I stayed,Ratanak Sky Inn GuestHouseAlthough a small hotel, it offers WIFI and air conditioning for comfort, with a view overlooking the market and fresh fruit stalls across the street. Walking down to see people sitting and receiving IV fluids in the room below the nearby hospital was another experience that made me feel the simplicity and sincerity of the locals.
Lglak Food Trip, Khmer Cuisine of Rattanak Kiri with mr.hotsia
Lglak is another local dish I didn’t miss, especially at a market stall in Ban Lung that made it very delicious. Lglak is a dish similar to rice with curry but with authentic Khmer flavors—bold and harmonious. It’s a dish I recommend trying when visiting here.
