Bousra Waterfall, a wonder of Mondulkiri, Cambodia
If you ask me, mr.hotsia, where in Cambodia you can experience the ultimate natural atmosphere without paying expensive entrance fees, Bousra Waterfall in Mondulkiri province is the answer I sincerely recommend. Bousra Waterfall, locally called “Usura,” which in the local dialect means “U” liquor jar, similar to the traditional liquor jars used by the Phu Thai people in our region. This name sounds unusual but reflects the lifestyle and culture of the local people very well.
Bousra Waterfall is not directly in Sen Monorom town but about 43 kilometers away. The road to the waterfall is good and easy to ride. I recommend foreign tourists visiting Mondulkiri to rent a motorcycle from Sen Monorom town and ride there themselves to fully enjoy the scenery along the way. There are many rental shops in town with affordable prices, only 200-300 baht per day. Traffic is not heavy like in big cities. If you are not used to riding motorcycles, just drive slowly and you can comfortably reach the waterfall.
Along the way, I met a tribal girl dressed in beautiful traditional attire by the waterfall stream. It seems there is a service to rent traditional costumes for photos, similar to what I saw in Vietnam. This is a highlight not to be missed if you want to deeply experience local culture. Bousra Waterfall itself has three tiers to explore, or you can ride a motorcycle to the hill tribe village at the top tier.
At the waterfall, there are restaurants and souvenir shops lined up, making it a one-stop destination. I saw locals selling fresh local vegetables along the walkway, and hill tribe people playing 10-string fiddles with traditional music along the path, adding a simple and romantic atmosphere. I even recorded video clips to keep as good memories.
What impressed me the most was seeing a hill tribe girl in traditional dress sitting by the waterfall stream. The scene looked like a painting, very fresh and peaceful. The waterfall has strong and wide water flow, with sunlight filtering through large trees creating beautiful water curtains. It is perfect for travelers wanting to escape the city chaos and experience raw nature.
Travel and accommodation in Sen Monorom
Before reaching Bousra Waterfall, I recommend preparing to stay in Sen Monorom town first, as it is the travel hub of Mondulkiri. From Phnom Penh, it takes about 7 hours by bus from Soraya company. The bus departs at 8:15 AM once daily. For a relaxed trip, take the bus to arrive in the late afternoon, then find comfortable accommodation before heading out for the waterfall adventure the next day.
Sen Monorom offers various accommodations, from budget guesthouses that I like for their local atmosphere to larger hotels. Prices are moderate, around 300 baht per night. There is no air conditioning because the weather is comfortably cool year-round. Most accommodations have hot water and good 3G internet. Mobile phone service is also convenient.Read accommodation details in Sen Monoromto prepare before traveling
Local flavors and atmosphere in Mondulkiri
Speaking of local food in Mondulkiri, I recommend stopping by a restaurant near the Kouprey statue in Sen Monorom town. This place offers grilled beef, made-to-order dishes, and the famous Mondulkiri coffee. I personally love the coffee here for its strong and fragrant taste. If you visit, don’t forget to try Mondulkiri coffee atwhich I wrote about in this articleI guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
Also, the morning market in Sen Monorom has delicious fried meatball stalls and fresh fruit smoothies. I tried a mixed fruit smoothie with durian; it was sweet, creamy, and refreshing, like eating fresh natural dessert. There is also a shop selling 'U' liquor, traditional liquor stored in jars, priced affordably at 200-300 baht per jar, giving a sense of the Khmer and indigenous hill tribe lifestyle that still strongly preserves their original culture.Read more about local food and drinks
Experience unique lifestyle and nature
Besides Bousra Waterfall, this area also has hill tribe villages where you can closely observe local lifestyle and culture. Most villagers still live simply, growing vegetables, raising animals, and selling local products traditionally. I talked with several locals selling vegetables by the roadside. This atmosphere reminded me of small towns in Northeastern Thailand that still maintain warmth and friendliness.
If you ride a motorcycle along the mountain routes around Mondulkiri, you will see mountain views and vast grasslands stretching to the horizon, with clusters of pine trees resembling the Switzerland of Cambodia, which I mentioned in a previous article.Read about Switzerland of CambodiaThe weather here is cool and comfortable all year, perfect for nature lovers wanting to escape the hustle of big cities.
Summary of impressions from the Bousra Waterfall trip
For me, mr.hotsia, Bousra Waterfall is not just an ordinary waterfall but a destination that perfectly combines nature, hill tribe lifestyle, and charming local culture in Cambodia. The atmosphere here suits those who want to experience peace and the beauty of a waterfall that has not been spoiled by commercial tourism.
If anyone is interested in experiencing it like me, I recommend planning to stay one night in Sen Monorom, try Mondulkiri coffee and local food, then rent a motorcycle to travel to Bousra Waterfall for convenience and a truly complete experience.
Finally, I hope you open your heart to come here and feel as I do. mr.hotsia August 2012
