Travel to Mondulkiri Province, Cambodia
If you are planning to visit Mondulkiri, a province known for its beautiful nature and cool climate, I, mr.hotsia, would like to share my direct travel experience. Mondulkiri is located in the northeast of Cambodia, nearly 400 kilometers from Phnom Penh. Most of the route is mountainous, making the journey challenging and requiring good preparation.
For the most convenient travel from Phnom Penh, I recommend taking the Soriyah bus company, which has only one departure daily at 8:15 AM. It takes about 7 hours to reach Sen Monorom, the main city of Mondulkiri, arriving in the late afternoon. This is suitable for travelers who want a comfortable and unhurried journey. Those coming from Siem Reap can also take a bus to Kampong Cham to continue to Mondulkiri.
This route passes an important junction called Snow Junction, a major road intersection. If coming from Phnom Penh and turning right at this junction, you will enter Mondulkiri. Turning left leads to Kracheh, Stung Treng, and Ratanakiri. Traveling to these provinces may require local vans packed with passengers, which can be inconvenient for tourists unfamiliar with the routes.
For the return trip from Mondulkiri, you can take a bus back to Phnom Penh from Sen Monorom in the morning. If you want to continue to Kracheh, you must transfer to a van at Snow Junction, then continue to Stung Treng or Ratanakiri. There are also two daily buses from Stung Treng to Pakse, Laos. If you plan to cross the border from Mondulkiri to Laos, this is an interesting option.
For those wanting to go to Siem Reap from Mondulkiri, I recommend transferring at Kampong Cham for convenience. Besides Soriyah, there are other bus companies operating between Phnom Penh and Mondulkiri, though I don't recall their names. These buses park near the Soriyah bus queue in front of the market. Generally, they are air-conditioned. If you have a fixed return date, it is best to buy tickets in advance, as buses often fill up quickly.
Life in Sen Monorom and Nearby Attractions
Upon arriving in Sen Monorom, I, mr.hotsia, recommend experiencing the local lifestyle and flavors. There are many delicious local restaurants here, especially the corner shop near the Kouprey statue that sells grilled beef with a beer garden. They offer made-to-order dishes and the famous Mondulkiri coffee. If you want to taste this highland coffee, I suggest trying the iced coffee here—it’s truly delicious. Additionally, the Sen Monorom morning market has stalls selling fried meatballs and very refreshing fruit smoothies. I personally like ordering mixed fruit juice with durian. The taste is so good it makes you want to relax as if you were at home. For those wanting to deeply experience the morning market atmosphere and local food, I recommend reading more in the articleLocal Food of Mondulkiri Province
If you love nature and tranquility, Bousra Waterfall is a must-visit. It is about 43 kilometers from Sen Monorom. The road is convenient and safe if you rent a motorcycle (rental price 200-300 THB per day). The waterfall area is beautiful with resting spots and souvenir shops. I once saw tourists renting tribal costumes to take photos here, which added colorful charm. Read more details atBousra Waterfall
Besides the waterfall, the area around Sen Monorom has beautiful hills and grasslands, earning it the nickname “Switzerland of Cambodia.” The cool weather and complex mountain views are similar to Khao Kho in Thailand. This kind of feeling is rare to find elsewhere in Cambodia. Read about the atmosphere of Sen Monorom atSwitzerland of Cambodia
Accommodation in Sen Monorom and Recommendations from mr.hotsia
Although Sen Monorom is a small town, there are nearly ten accommodation options. When I stayed, I chose a budget wooden guesthouse costing about 300 THB per night. It had no air conditioning, but the weather was already cool, and there was sufficient hot water. This type of accommodation allowed me to truly experience local life, as there was no WIFI, but I used 3G without any problem.
For those who prefer not to travel as walk-ins, I recommend booking accommodation in advance through Agoda to ensure availability and avoid worries about full bookings. There are three large hotels and up to 26 guesthouses to choose from. See details atHotels and Accommodation in Sen Monorom
Overview and Travel Tips by mr.hotsia
Traveling to Mondulkiri is not easy for general tourists, but with good preparation, using Soriyah bus company is the most convenient and safest option. Just allow extra time for the long journey and winding mountain roads, and be sure to book tickets in advance, especially during holidays or festivals, as buses fill up quickly.
Upon arriving in Sen Monorom, I recommend trying the delicious and diverse local food from market-side restaurants and street vendors. The food here is flavorful and unique. Also, don’t forget to taste the famous Mondulkiri coffee or buy some as souvenirs.
Finally, I, mr.hotsia, want everyone to experience the lifestyle and nature of Mondulkiri for themselves. This place offers not only beautiful nature but also a cultural atmosphere and warmth of the people that is hard to find elsewhere.
