Switzerland of Cambodia: Mondulkiri, the city of cool air and beautiful mountain ranges
When people mention “Switzerland,” many might imagine tall mountains, lush green meadows, and cool, pleasant weather. But did you know that Cambodia also has a place playfully called the “Switzerland of Cambodia”? That is Mondulkiri Province, especially the town of Sen Monorom, which I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit. I can say this town is perfect for nature lovers who want to experience cool mountain-like weather in a tropical region.
Mondulkiri is located in northeastern Cambodia, nearly 400 kilometers from Phnom Penh. Getting to Sen Monorom town is easier than you might think. I chose to take a bus from Soraya company departing Phnom Penh in the morning. It took about 7 hours to reach the town in the late afternoon. The route includes paved roads and mountain passes, so be prepared to see changing scenic views all the way to your destination.Read more about traveling to Mondulkiri
Sen Monorom: My second home in Mondulkiri
I stayed at a small guesthouse, a wooden house in Sen Monorom town. The price was about 300 baht per night. There was no air conditioning, but it wasn’t necessary because the weather here is comfortably cool all day. Just having a water heater was enough. Staying in a guesthouse made me feel like I was truly living with the locals, which is one of the charms of this place.See accommodation options in Sen Monorom
Sen Monorom has many local restaurants to choose from. My favorite was a corner shop near the Kouprey statue. They sell grilled buffalo, made-to-order dishes, and the famous Mondulkiri coffee. I tried it myself, and the taste was richer and more satisfying than the international food available in town. Another must-visit spot is the fried meatball and smoothie stall in front of the market. Their mixed fruit smoothie with durian is especially amazing.Read about local food in Mondulkiri
Route to Dak Dum Village and the ridge grasslands
From Sen Monorom, if you drive or ride a motorcycle about 2-3 kilometers toward Phnom Penh, you will find a left turn to Dak Dum Village. This route is one of my favorite highlights because along the way you can see intricate mountain ranges and green grass-covered hills. Some spots have pine trees scattered, making the view resemble European mountains.
I rode a motorcycle up the ridge and saw views stretching as far as the eye could see. The cool air made me almost forget I was in a tropical zone. The charm here is the tranquility and the well-preserved natural environment. It’s perfect for those who enjoy slow travel, taking photos, stopping to admire the view, and losing track of time.
Bousra Waterfall: A natural beauty not to be missed
If you talk about natural attractions that everyone must visit, Bousra Waterfall is the answer. This waterfall is about 43 kilometers from Sen Monorom. I recommend renting a motorcycle from town because the roads are good and convenient (rental price around 200-300 baht per day).Read Bousra Waterfall review
Bousra Waterfall is wide and powerful. The top tier can even be passed by motorcycle to reach a hill tribe village. When I visited, I saw locals wearing beautiful traditional costumes, and they offered costume rentals for photos, similar to Vietnam. It was a unique and interesting experience.
Mondulkiri Coffee: A drink you must try
As I, mr.hotsia, have mentioned before, Mondulkiri coffee is one of Cambodia’s prized products, widely recognized. Because the area is high and close to the Vietnamese highlands, the coffee here has a great taste and strong aroma. I tried iced coffee from the corner shop near the Kouprey statue in Sen Monorom, and the rich, smooth flavor is something I highly recommend.Read about Mondulkiri coffee
For those who like to buy souvenirs, coffee shops in town sell packaged coffee to take home. It’s a wonderful memory from a small town full of warmth and natural beauty.
Sen Monorom Morning Market: Taste local food and Khmer lifestyle
If you want to truly experience the community atmosphere, don’t miss walking through the morning market in Sen Monorom. It’s full of local food and fresh produce from villagers. I, mr.hotsia, recommend trying fried meatballs, fruit smoothies, and various snacks sold at the market.See more about Sen Monorom morning market
There is also homemade rice wine called 'Ou' sold in jars by locals at reasonable prices. It reflects the lifestyle of the people here deeply. If you want to try a local drink, don’t miss it.
Summary of the journey and experiences from mr.hotsia
Mondulkiri and Sen Monorom are places that I, mr.hotsia, found very impressive. The cool weather, beautiful mountain views, and the simple, charming Khmer lifestyle make it perfect for those wanting to escape the hustle of big cities and truly connect with nature.
If you enjoy slow-paced adventures, tasting local coffee, trying traditional food, and riding motorcycles to see mountain views, I highly recommend adding Mondulkiri to your must-visit list.
